Default Gun Safety Review

I know that most of you who are gun people already know the Four Rules, but for the benefit of those who may not, and because there has been a rash of gun accidents in this area lately, and because it is always good to brush up on safety, I wanted to re-post this for review and discussion:

Quote:
Four Rules of Gun Safety, by Jeff Cooper

1. All guns are always loaded.
-Even if they are not, think of them as if they are.

2. Never let the muzzle cover (point at) anything you are not willing to destroy.
-For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
-This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.

4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
-You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.
With the Colonelís permission I would add to these ďMaintain Positive Control.Ē Donít leave your gun in the car, donít lean it up against anything, and donít lend it to anyone who isnít qualified. You canít apply rules One through Four if youíre not controlling the gun. Have fun, and shoot safe!

Holy cow, and that was a policeman?!? Guess he forgot PRS's 4 rules.

Thanks for posting them, we both just recently got our CWP and want to get a new gun for me. I'm looking for a firearm safety class to attend first, it's been too long since I've even fired a gun...

Flo, you should take a look at the Ruger LCR (Lightweight Compact Revolver). I own one. It is very compact and lightweight (13.5 ounces). Easy to conceal. In addition, revolvers are easy to use. It has received excellent reviews. I'm about to improve mine by adding tritium night sights and a Crimson Trace laser sight (I am a belt and suspenders person - if I need to use it, I don't want to miss)

They also make a lightweight, compact pistol called the Ruger LCP (Lightweight Compact Pistol):

Thanks for that recommendation, PTM! We definitely are looking at a revolver as opposed to an automatic.

Iíve wanted one of those Rugers since they came out! One of the unsung benefits of the revolver is that it behaves the same in dry firing as it does live.

A stainless steel slab that launches shotgun slugs. Yeah. Gas powered semi-auto too! I couldnít rationalize spending that much of my own money on one, but if someone got me one, Iíd keep it!

Fixed!

Ok, seriously though, that *is* a really cool-looking gun Max posted but automatics scare me.
