Morning Report: Frankie Edgar Demands a Rematch, Pros Predict Sonnen vs. Silva II

Quote:
Mar 1, 2012 - Three weeks ago the MMA community was frenzied with debate over Carlos Condit's divisive victory against Nick Diaz. Now we're back here again. New names, nearly the same problem.

In any other sport, this turn of events would be fairly frustrating. But that's the unique thing about MMA (and the UFC in particular). What the community wants, they generally get. Were it not for Nick's love of weed, the Diaz-Condit rematch would likely already be on the books. So this is really your call.

Do you want to see Frankie Edgar rematch Ben Henderson? Would you rather see him drop down to challenge Jose Aldo? Or would you just like to see him work his way back up the lightweight ladder? Catch up with the latest in the Frankie-Bendo-Dana saga and let your voice be heard with the Morning Report.

Edgar demanded his rematch while nipping a drop to featherweight in the bud on Wednesday's The MMA Hour.
Frankie Edgar guaranteed automatic title shot at featherweight. Despite Frankie's request, Dana White remained in favor of the former champ dropping to featherweight, and he's willing to sweeten the pot to get him there.
'Shogun' Rua wants rematch with 'Rampage' Jackson. Shogun revealed that he and Rampage both refuse to retire until they can meet in the cage one final time.
Rampage Jackson used testosterone before his fight against Ryan Bader. Jackson revealed that he used physician-prescribed testosterone replacement therapy in advance of last Saturday's UFC 144 event.
The resurrection of Ian McCall. From drug abuse, to prison, to a near-death experience, McCall details the incredible road that has him poised two fights away from becoming a UFC champion.

Morning Report: Enter the Flyweights; Faber to Cruz: 'You're Welcome for Letting You Live'

Quote:
Mar 2, 2012 - What a weekend we have in front of us. Two events. Two days. One brand new division.
Finally, after years of teasing hints and playful false starts, the flyweights have truly arrived, and it couldn't have gone down any other way. A good old-fashioned tournament, just like the old days. The two men who fans and pundits alike have always referred to as future titleholders at 125-pounds, and the two champions of the world's most renown flyweight organizations. When the blood settles tonight, two of these fighters will be one step closer to the UFC's eighth and final goldcard.
And that's still not even mentioning a blistering welterweight showdown with guaranteed fireworks, plus the most heavily-hyped women's bout since 2009. So fellow fight fans, with that being said, get ready for a weekend to remember with the Morning Report.

Morning Report: Ronda Rousey's Grisly Armbar and the Fourth Round That Never Was

Quote:
Mar 5, 2012 - Who could have guessed the debut of a new UFC division would be overshadowed by a women's title fight, in Strikeforce, no less.
But it was, and at least for now, the landscape of mixed martial arts appears to have evolved dramatically. Ronda Rousey's gruesome victory over Miesha Tate was a performance that captivated the MMA community unlike any women's match since 2009, and now "Rowdy" Ronda has become what Gina Carano was supposed to be.
Though lets not overstate the situation. WMMA obviously has a long road ahead of it. But with the help of a bona fide star -- a 25-year-old with Olympic pedigree, unquestionable ferocity, and Sonnen-esque skills on the mic -- the horizon suddenly looks a whole lot brighter. Catch up with the entire Rousey-Tate aftermath, as well as the UFC's flyweight tourney fallout with the Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
Ronda Rousey calls title win 'big deal' for women's MMA. And if you missed out, do yourself a favor and check out all the electrifying Strikeforce video highlights.
A short list of the most savage armbars in MMA history. Following Rousey's dramatic victory on Saturday night, Ben Thapa put together a GIF-fest of a feature, asking whether we just witnessed the greatest MMA armbar of all time.
Strikeforce fighter Brandon Saling in question for Neo-Nazi tattoos and criminal past. Internet detectives discovered the rather unsavory past of Strikeforce undercard fighter Brandon Saling, including Neo-Nazi tattoos and a police charge "in connection with an alleged rape of a person under 13."
Ian McCall vs. Demetrious Johnson a ruled a draw. The UFC's flyweight tournament hit a snag when Australian commission representative Craig Waller incorrectly totaled the scores for Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall. According to Dana White, a rematch is currently in the works.
Strikeforce: Josh Barnett vs. Daniel Cormier set for May 19. Over a year after its inception, the end is finally in sight for Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix.

Morning Report: UFC's Heavyweight Holiday Bonanza

Quote:
Mar 8, 2012 - Wednesday was looking like a pretty slow news day right up until the moment it wasn't. Two announcements later and the MMA community had experienced a minor explosion.

Within a span of a few hours, UFC 146 transformed from a solid card to one of the year's best lineups (and perhaps one of the best in recent memory). What we now had was a heavyweight extravaganza, sporting a mammoth title fight (dos Santos vs. Overeem), a solid number-one contenders bout (Velasquez vs. Mir), and a slobber-knocker duel between lower contenders (Silva vs. Nelson). Score one for the big guys.

Around this time, various commentators on this site starting referring to the Memorial Day weekend event as a theme card, the likes of which we haven't seen in quite a while. But why? While booking all heavies surely doesn't do much in the way of diversity, it certainly seems like a cool way to keep a division running smoothly. No more waiting around for everyone's timetable to match up. Instead just have the top six or eight guys slug it out on the same night. Winners fight winners as soon as possible. Everything keeps flowing, unlike some divisions (I'm looking at you, lightweight).

Of course, overuse of this would probably get a little boring. But every once in a while, why not just throw a theme card out there to get people's blood pumping? Besides, multiple hours of heavyweight violence is an idea I think most of us can get behind.

5 MUST-READ STORIES

Cain Velasquez vs. Frank Mir set for UFC 146.
Velasquez and Mir have agreed to meet in a Memorial Day weekend match-up to determine the UFC heavyweight division's next number-one contender.

Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva vs. Roy Nelson slated for UFC 146. Roy Nelson's drop to 205 pounds may seem inevitable at this point, but right now he's still a heavyweight. So what better way for him to go out than by taking on a giant of a man on the year's premier heavyweight card?

Josh Koscheck: If AKA had real coaches, it would have produced more champions. Koscheck blasts his former coaches at American Kickboxing Academy, before discussing his new gym and his upcoming fight against Johny Hendricks.

Michael Chandler vs. Akihiro Gono booked for Bellator 67. Bellator's latest "superfight" sees lightweight champion Michael Chandler take on PRIDE/UFC veteran Akihiro Gono on May 4 in Ontario, Canada.

Pat Barry planning on letting hair grow until he submits someone in UFC. Ariel Helwani caught up with the always-entertaining Pat Barry and somehow the conversation turned to pizza and haircuts.

Morning Report: 'The Ultimate Fighter' and Bellator Collide

Quote:
Mar 9, 2012 - This week was kind of strange. And the next five weeks are probably going to be stranger. But we're spoiled as MMA fans now. A month-and-a-half between major events used to be nothing.

Besides, mixed martial arts has reached the point where even if the schedule looks empty, it isn't really. Case in point: between the newly revamped "The Ultimate Fighter" and a brand new season of the promotion that just brought us this and this and THIS (and this and this), Friday nights are about to become the new Saturday. So sit back and get ready for tonight's fights with the Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
The hurt business: a year in the life of an MMA fight team.
Ben Fowlkes invades Grudge Training Center to examine the hidden lives of pro fighters and watch as fortunes rise and fall over the course of one calendar year in the first installment of this multi-part series.
Bellator 60: Joe Warren vs. Pat Curran dissection. Dallas Winston kicks the door down to Bellator's sixth season with a gif-tastic breakdown of tonight's featherweight championship.
For Bellator's Bjorn Rebney, eventual Spike move vindicates long-term vision. Bellator's CEO discusses his long journey to Spike, upcoming production changes, and the format that allows fighters "to be like Butler in the NCAA's March Madness."
Daniel Cormier would consider cutting weight for a 205-pound 'superfight.' Despite his past weight cutting struggles, Cormier would give it one more shot for a superfight against a top 205-pounder.
Marloes Coenen cast in Dutch version of ‘Survivor.' The former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion joined twelve of the Netherlands' biggest celebrities in the survival reality show "De Schat van De Oranje."

Morning Report: MMA's Weekend Smorgasbord, Jon Jones Talks Silva Superfight

Quote:
Mar 12, 2012 - Indulge me in a rant real quick. I understand Joe Warren isn't exactly the most popular fighter out there right now, but what exactly was going through Jeff Malott's head as he watched Pat Curran bomb on a 35-year-old man with roughly 436 unanswered shots on Friday night? A referee's primary role is to ensure the safety of both fighters. Malott failed. I know it's cliché to grumble about the refing and judging in MMA, but this issue is getting out-of-hand.

Guys like Nick Diaz and Gene LeBell have called for officials to carry a background in combat sports and undergo extensive, mandatory martial arts training in order to grasp the severity of given situations. That sounds great in theory, but a quick Google search reveals Malott to have an extensive background in sambo and even a few professional fights under his belt. So what then?

This is a murky issue and no one seems to have the right answer, but when it comes down to it, as a former fighter Malott failed Warren immensely by not understanding how unhealthy it is for a human skull to be bludgeoned unconscious three different times in a span of thirty seconds.

Anyhow, now that we've got that out of the way, how about all that magnificent violence we saw this weekend? Between the twin premieres of Bellator and The Ultimate Fighter, along with Cro Cop's homecoming and the first ever MMA event held in India, there were plenty of brawls to go around, so check out all the action with the Morning Report.

Jon Jones would rather have Anderson Silva as a mentor than fight him. The question of who would win a superfight between the UFC's two most dominant champions, Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, has been debated ad nauseum by fight fans. But according to Jones, he'd rather look to Silva as a mentor than an opponent.
Fedor Emelianenko hints at possible UFC fight. Where would March be without the monthly Fedor-to-UFC tidbit? In a recent interview, the aging Russian legend opened the door for a shot at Octagon glory.

Morning Report: Chris Leben Talks Addiction, Jose Aldo Spars a Fan

Quote:
Mar 13, 2012 - Candor is a rare currency in professional sports. With the rise of the social media machine, honesty and personality are often considered taboo. In their place, athletes are taught to give little more than canned answers straight from the mouth of P.R. engines, and who can blame them when one slip-up has the potential to explode in an instant?

Rarely do you see an interviewee as heartbreakingly forthright as Chris Leben was on Monday. As he poured out his mortality on The MMA Hour, accepting full responsibility for his ongoing battle with substance abuse, Leben ceased being "The Crippler" and instead reverted back to Chris, a simple 31-year-old man struggling with the pressures and anxieties of real life.

It's easy to become jaded with sports, but interviews like his help remind us that there is a very real human element to all of this that is too often forgotten. So if you haven't heard it already, do yourself a favor and check out Leben's words.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
The MMA Hour is back.
Ariel Helwani and The MMA Hour return with a packed show featuring Chris Leben, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, Pat Curran, Miesha Tate, Matt Mitrione and Marlos Coenen.
Chris Leben talks rehab. Leben, for the first time since receiving his UFC suspension, candidly discussed painkiller and alcohol addition, and the rehab that has him fighting for his life.
TUF: Brazil cast list revealed. Sixteen middleweights and sixteen featherweights have been announced as the opening field for the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.
Anthony Johnson signs with Titan Fighting Championships. Johnson spoke publicly for the first time since his unceremonious release from the UFC, revealing plans to fight at 185 pounds for Titan Fighting Championships on May 25.
Dana White says UFC may move away from PPV. White opened the door for the UFC to possibly transition away from the pay-per-view business model in the future.

I keep posting these morning reports at night. Whoops.

Morning Report: Dana White TUF Video Blog, Rampage Bids Farewell With Shogun

Quote:
Mar 14, 2012 - So Rampage Jackson complained for a few weeks then got both his wishes granted -- a fight against Shogun and a release from the UFC. Good for him, I guess.

Realistically, it seems like there's only one of a few ways this situation can go. 1) Rampage gets smashed by Shogun, then leaves the UFC to hit the Bellator/DREAM/M-1/ONE FC circuit, which would be weird. Or, 2) A motivated Rampage, aided by TRT, trains harder then he has in years and either -- A) fights an absolute war with Shogun, or, B) evokes the spirit of '07 and knocks Shogun the hell out.

The thing is, if either one of those last two options happen, could you really see the UFC just giving up the golden gift of a revitalized Rampage Jackson to a competitor? There's absolutely no way that happens, right? Rampage is (self-admittedly) an emotional guy, and Zuffa is perhaps the most business savvy promotion in MMA. So is this really the end of Rampage in the UFC? Who knows, but it's probably more up in the air then we'd imagine.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
Rampage Jackson to fight Shogun Rua in farewell fight.
Rampage Jackson is slated to fight Shogun Rua in a rematch of their PRIDE Total Elimination 2005 brawl, before he can be granted his UFC release. A timetable for the match has yet to be announced.
The fighter who stayed too long. Ben Fowlkes recounts the tragic tale of Gary Goodridge, who after a lifetime of battles in the ring, now finds himself struggling with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.
UFC taking action against individuals who illegally stream events. If you've illegally streamed a recent UFC event, there's a good chance Zuffa has your information and will be looking to take legal action against you.
Anthony Pettis considering a drop to featherweight. "Showtime" would reportedly be open to a drop to 145-pounds if it meant an instant title shot against UFC champ Jose Aldo.
M-1 champ Vinny Magalhaes declares free agency. Magalhaes, a former TUF'er and M-1's reigning light heavyweight champion, has hit the free market after a fierce, prolonged squabble with the Russian promotion.

Morning Report: NSAC Calls Nick Diaz a Liar, Brendan Schaub Hunts for Ghosts

Quote:
Mar 15, 2012 - Nick Diaz may be in the midst of the most bizarre five-month stretch in MMA history. Let's recap.

Diaz destroys B.J. Penn's face so hard, Penn retires. Diaz then enrages Georges St. Pierre so badly, Georges demands Diaz take Carlos Condit's title shot at UFC 143. Impressive stuff so far.

Diaz gets his fight, Carlos is sad, but one Canadian knee eruption later, he's back in the game. Both men hype the match as a "dogfight," but Condit works a counter-heavy gameplan into a divisive decision victory. An incredulous Diaz promptly retires.

After days of public fervor, Condit's camp asks to run it back. Only problem, Diaz sure does love his weed. Weeks go by and the story fades out until the Diaz camp unexpectedly lawyers up, claiming Diaz didn't technically break any of the NSAC's rules. And now we're here, with the NSAC calling Diaz a liar, and the story is very, very far from over.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
NSAC claims Nick Diaz violated the law on UFC 143 pre-fight questionnaire. Nevada State Athletic Commission representative Jennifer M. Lopez revealed that Nick Diaz "lied" to the commission by swearing he had not taken any prescribed medications two weeks out from UFC 143.
Bellator 61 dissection. Dallas Winston is back with another gif-tastic breakdown of Eric Prindle vs. Thiago Santos and Bellator's middleweight quarterfinals.
Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve confirmed for UFC 146. The addition of Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve completes UFC 146's all-heavyweight main card, slated for Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas.
Cesar Gracie says Pettis or Penn may challenge Melendez next. Zuffa is struggling to find viable opponents for Gilbert Melendez, so Cesar Gracie threw down the gauntlet for a pair of surprising names.
Demian Maia moving down to welterweight. Maia announced his impending drop from 185 pounds to 170 on Wednesday morning. An opponent or timetable for his welterweight debut has yet to be decided.

COUNTDOWN TO A SLIMMER ROY NELSON

Yesterday's mark: 101,780 likes.
As of this writing: 102,094 likes.
Goal (by March 18th): 132,000 likes.
Roy, you may not have technically lost this bet, but over 70,000 people wanted to see you cut down to 205. That has to count for something, right?

Morning Report: March Madness Begins, Rampage Jackson Presses Pause

Quote:
Mar 16, 2012 - Rampage Jackson's strange UFC saga hit a snag and tonight's Bellator 61 card underwent a late shake-up. But you want to know yesterday's sneaky-important MMA story? It doesn't even involve MMA.

Day one of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Brock Lesnar, Phil Davis, Johny Hendricks -- these guys were all D-1 champs, and with the diverging paths of today's wrestling and MMA scenes, more and more blue-chip prospects are forgoing the mat for the more lucrative call of mixed martial arts.

If you've never seen combat sports' version of March Madness, give it a shot and check out some of today's matches. You could be seeing the guys again real soon.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
NCAA Division I wrestling championship session 1 results. Penn State University took the early lead at the opening day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Check out all the Session One and Session Two results.
Rampage Jackson to have double knee surgery. Rampage revealed via Twitter that he will undergo surgery on both of his knees, delaying his recently announced farewell bout against Shogun.
The hurt business: highs and lows in the brick city. Ben Fowlkes offers the second installment of his hit multi-part series that examines the hidden lives of pro fighters within Colorado's Grudge Training Center.
Bellator 61 weigh-in results. Official weigh-ins for tonight's Bellator 61 fight card were held at The Orleans Room at Horseshoe Riverdome in Bossier City, Louisiana. All main card fighters met their required weight.
Eric Prindle scratched from Bellator 61. Tonight's planned Bellator 61 headliner, Eric Prindle vs. Thiago Santos, has been rescheduled for Bellator 62 after Prindle was unable to overcome flu-like symptoms on Thursday.
