Morning Report: Anderson Silva Talks Old Age, Jon Jones Verbally Spars With Rashad Evans

Quote:
Feb 17, 2012 - It's strange to think how much time has passed since Anderson Silva first introduced himself to western audiences with a glorified mercy killing of Chris Leben at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 5. None could have predicted the artistry that took place in the cage that night, just as none could have foreseen the run of brillance, and sometimes absurdity, that would follow over the next six years.
But that time has passed, and at 36 years old, Silva's professional mortality is quickly becoming a reality. Check out what "The Spider" had to on the subject, along with who he'd prefer to face in a career-ending superfight on today's Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES TO START YOUR DAY
Anderson Silva would like to fight Georges St-Pierre, but not Jon Jones. Silva was surprisingly honest when asked about his advancing age, Chael Sonnen, and which superfight remains a possibility.
Dana White says all main events to be five rounds after Ellenberger vs. Sanchez. Whiteannounced a change in policy after UFC on FUEL's main event left fans wanting more.
UFC 145 press conference video. Jon Jones and Rashad Evans kicked off their UFC 145 promotional tour with the official pre-fight presser in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jon Jones and Rashad Evans reignite rivalry. The two former friends lost themselves trading barbs on Thursday afternoon, but both men eventually agreed on one thing -- their title tilt won't last five rounds.
Waiting game continues for Dan Henderson. Dana White discussed the future of Dan Henderson and his strange spot in championship purgatory.
There's a lot more media (vids, tweets, etc) at the end of the article, which can be seen in its entirety here: http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/...-ufc-145-video

Morning Report: Georges St-Pierre 'Ahead of Schedule,' Chisora-Haye Brawl and More

Quote:
Feb 20, 2012 - To put it bluntly, this weekend was a mixed bag for combat sports. While the boxing world reignited due to Dereck Chisora's bizarre post-fight brawl with David Haye, mixed martial arts found itself alone in the corner, whispering sweet nothings to its crinkled UFC 144 flyer.
But like most non-fight weekends, we still somehow wound up with plenty of noteworthy morsels to pour over, from Georges St-Pierre's latest injury update and Brian Stann's Fox gig, to murmurs of Hendo vs. Machida and Jon Jones invoking Muhammad Ali comparisons. So catch up on all the MMA you may have missed with Monday's edition of the Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES TO START YOUR DAY
Georges St-Pierre injury update. GSP announced he is "ahead of schedule" in his efforts to return to the Octagon.
Jason Miller vs. C.B. Dollaway set for UFC 146. Mayhem finally has his next UFC fight booked for May 26 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Dereck Chisora brawls with David Haye after Chisora vs. Klitschko. Following Dereck Chisora's decision loss to Vitali Klitschko on Saturday, Chisora and David Haye erupted into a violent brawl that was captured on video and eventually led to both men's arrest.
Greg Jackson will corner Jon Jones against Rashad Evans. After much debate, Evans' former trainer, Greg Jackson, has decided to corner Jon Jones at UFC 145.
For Anthony Pettis, one spectacular kick changed everything. Pettis reflected back to the moment that changed his life, for better or worse.

Jon Jones named 'Honorary Race Official' for Daytona 500. In a strange melding of worlds, Jones will take part in the pre-race ceremonies for NASCAR's biggest race.

Morning Report: Previewing UFC 144, Flyweight Tourney Adds Sudden Death Rounds

Quote:
Feb 24, 2012 - After all we've been through in the early stages of 2012, the phrase "never leave it in the hands of the judges" has never meant more than it does now. Just ask Dana White.
Aside from griping and hand-wringing, the problem appears to be out of anyone's control, and with the UFC's flyweight tournament resting over the horizon, another judging disaster has the potential to implode the legitimacy of an entire division before it even takes off.
So it shouldn't surprise anyone that the UFC apparently has a plan, and according to "Mighty Mouse" Johnson, the wheels are already in motion.

5 MUST-READ STORIES TO START YOUR DAY

Sean Loeffler details wild and dangerous fight in the Philippines. You're bound to run into some strange sights when you've been in the fight game as long as Sean Loeffler, but few could top the night he spent in the Philippines back in 2002.

Morning Report: Frankie Edgar's Featherweight Dilemma, Debating Henderson vs. Pettis II

Quote:
Feb 27, 2012 - What a weekend.

Rampage Jackson hurled PRIDE fans one final shot of nostalgia with a vintage powerbomb. Mark Hunt penned another chapter of a storybook run in his old stomping grounds. Joe Rogan spontaneously combusted as Tim Boetsch blasted his way to eleventh-hour glory. Anthony Pettis lived up to his nickname, rocketing into title contention in utterly spectacular fashion.

And of course, Ben Henderson gutted his way to the sport's highest level, capping the night in tearful celebration with his mother as gold draped around his waist.

Even now, it's hard to put into words what took place on Saturday night. Between the nostalgic return to Japan and the greatest collective spectacle of any card in recent memory, UFC 144 produced an unexplainably unique experience that will not soon be forgotten. Relive the action and catch up with the aftermath on today's Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES TO START YOUR DAY

UFC 144 post-fight interviews.
Ariel Helwani caught up with all the stars of UFC 144, including UFC president Dana White, new lightweight champion Ben Henderson, Rampage Jackson, Anthony Pettis, and Mark Hunt.

Frankie Edgar doesn't 'need' to drop to featherweight. With wins over Jim Miller, B.J. Penn (x2) and Gray Maynard, Frankie Edgar has one of the sharpest résumés in the entire 155-pound division. So why does one loss relegate him to the featherweight division?

Time for Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis II. Michael David Smith examined Saturday night's biggest storylines, highlighting the winners, the losers, notable quotes, and the UFC's next blockbuster rematch on the Morning After.

Hatsu Hioki is Japan's last best hope for a UFC title. After cementing his status as the No. 2 featherweight in the world, Hioki may soon find himself carrying the hopes of a nation as Japan's only viable contender.

Rampage Jackson says he won't retire. Rampage surprised those expecting a post-UFC 144 retirement, and instead blamed his loss on an unspecified injury that nearly prevented him from competing.

Morning Report: 'The Ultimate Fighter 15' Cast List, Ben Henderson's Rejected TUF 9 Audition

Quote:
Feb 28, 2012 - Ever since it's inception in 2005, The Ultimate Fighter has proven to be the UFC's cornerstone for farming young talent, providing an ample slew of champions and contenders over the show's fourteen seasons. So with every release of a new season's cast, like we saw yesterday, there exists the faintest glimmer that we may be witnessing the rise of the next great champion. It's what draws us back year after year.

But you already know all that. And plus, the show is still as hit-or-miss as they come. Since 2009, just 21 of the 75 contestants presently hold a UFC contract, good for a lowly 28-percent success rate (not counting TUF 14).

So you're telling me, in a season that produced just three of those 21 names, former WEC champ and new UFC lightweight champ Ben Henderson couldn't make the cut? That seems baffling.

But what do I know. You be the judge. Check out Bendo's rejected TUF 9 audition tape, and catch up with all of yesterday's big news with the Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES

Carlos Condit willing to wait for 'Michael Jordan of MMA.' In speaking with our own Ariel Helwani, Condit revealed why he would be ready to wait for Georges St. Pierre if need be.

Ultimate Fighter cast announced. The UFC and FX revealed the 32-fighter cast that will participate in the The Ultimate Fighter 15.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Donald Cerrone booked for May 15. With an injury to Yves Edwards, Cerrone received a new opponent for his UFC on FUEL 3 lightweight duel.

Bellator's Blagoi Ivanov reportedly stabbed in heart. The undefeated Bulgarian heavyweight is clinging to life after a Sunday morning barroom brawl, according to reports.

Bas Rutten talks PRIDE, UFC 144, and K-1. Matt Roth caught up with El Guapo at Legacy Fighting Championship 10 as he prepared to celebrate his 47th birthday over the weekend.

Morning Report: Spike TV and the Kimbo Slice Effect, Dakota Cochrane's Story

Quote:
Feb 29, 2012 - Kimbo Slice achieved web stardom in 2003. He made his MMA debut with a win over Ray Mercer in 2007. He parlayed that into the CBS spotlight, shattering ratings records with the first MMA event ever aired on American network primetime in 2008.

Somehow he wound up in the UFC, cast on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter, again shattering rating records in 2009. Finally, he earned his Zuffa pink slip after losing to Matt Mitrione and subsequently retired from MMA in 2010.

Between those last four years, one question was asked ad nauseum by incredulous fight fans -- why? What was the appeal, and more prominently, why was it so ridiculously successful? How did someone with no working knowledge of MMA become the posterboy for MMA in the eyes of non-MMA fans?

Even now, two years later, he somehow remains relevant, like a lingering storm cloud that refuses to pass. Just look to Ariel Helwani's recent quest to discover ‘How Mainstream is MMA?' as proof.

So of course Spike TV tapped his services in their ratings crusade against Fox. And you know what else? It'll probably work. Check out all the details of the new deal, and catch up with all of yesterday's big news with the Morning Report.

5 MUST-READ STORIES
Spike uses Kimbo Slice to counter-program The Ultimate Fighter on FX. Spike TV tapped the services of the network's biggest-ever TV star in the war against Fox.

UFC on FX 2 predictions. Michael David Smith predicts the winners and losers of Friday's inaugural flyweight tournament.

UFC on FX 2: Fuel TV preliminary card dissection (part one). Dallas Winston returns with a quartet of his comprehensive visual breakdowns for UFC on FX 2's undercard, highlighting Kyle Noke vs. Andrew Craig, Mackens Semerzier vs. Daniel Pineda, Shawn Jordan vs. Oli Thompson, and Nick Penner vs. Anthony Perosh.

Dakota Cochrane discusses controversial past. The 25-year-old TUF hopeful addressed his pornographic past as he prepares to chase his UFC dream.

UFC 144 'Prelims' ratings. Saturday night's 'UFC Prelims' special on FX averaged 1.5 million viewers over the course of its two-hour broadcast.
