Today, December 7, is the 70th anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor.
FDR's address in front of Congress the next day, Dec. 8, 1941: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VqQA...eature=related My sister's mother-in-law's brother was on the USS Utah which was torpedoed. He survived and was at the 70th anniversary ceremony held at Pearl Harbor. I haven't seen any news footage of it, but he was supposed to be the one to raise the flag for the ceremony.

Thank you for posting this, Bonnie. I had heard portions of FDR's speech but never saw this video before. There was also newly discovered film and photos from that day. The footage is harrowing.
There are so few survivors left, your sister and her husband must be very proud of their uncle.

I was watching a program on the History channel last night, "Pearl Harbor: 24 Hours After". It was so interesting to see film footage and hear how FDR handled everything including his speech which he wrote himself because none of his speech writers were available.
It took several hours before the President finally received a detailed report about how devastating the attack had been to our military fleet and personnel. It really struck me just how cut off we were here in the mainland due to the limited means of communication available at the time. The President had no idea at that point if Japan was going to invade us or what their next target might be. Scary times much like today! Here's an article about the program: http://tv.nytimes.com/2011/12/07/art...ry-review.html Some still images from Pearl Harbor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=...ture=endscreen

That footage is incredible, Bonnie. I had looked for more but didn't find it, thx. It really brings home some of the terror of that day.
