Do you think Palhares might be on steroids? He looks like the Incredible Hulk.

That's the first time I saw someone celebrate when the fight wasn't over. Then he got in a late punch too. Meh.

This has been a crazy fight, that first round was amazing, Palhares would have finished him if he just kept going and let Dean stop the fight

Paulo Thiago vs. David Mitchell

Round 1:
Mitchell comes out to a "Star-Spangled Banner" mash-up and embraces the boos. Thiago, the Brazilian special forces soldier, gets the biggest crowd pop yet for a song everyone in this arena but me seems to know. Once the fight begins, Mitchell jabs his way forward with a strange little smile on his face. Thiago wings a wild right that misses, and the crowd goes wild. Leg kick by Thiago and, you guessed it, the crowd goes nuts. Thiago shoots and puts Miller on his back, moving right to side control. A song starts up, something about being Brazilian, I'm told. It's deafening. Back on their feet after little action, Mitchell's still smiling and trying to jab his way in. Thiago lands a glancing body blow with a spinning heel kick. Thiago ducks under a Mitchell punch and moves to his back, scooping him up for a slam. The chant of 'You're going to die' starts up in the crowd. Thiago tries to go to knee on stomach, but ends up relinquishing the position and letting Miller up again just before the round ends.

Round 2:
Mitchell gets some offense going for the first time by kicking Thiago's legs out from under him, then slipping in for a clinch against the fence. They get to the mat briefly, but Thiago doesn't seem like he wants to stay there. He stands, just to take Mitchell down, then lets him up again. Mitchell gets his jab going finally and pops Thiago's head back. Another takedown for Thiago, and he's in side control. I'm told the chant has just gotten obscene, and won't be repeated here. Just know it involved speculation about Mitchell's mother. Mitchell is bloodied about the eye in the final minute, but still game. Thiago seems to be tiring just a bit.

Round 3:
The crowd goes into the wave to start the third, then applauds their own effort. Again, this is a prelim fight. How are they going to keep this up all night? Thiago backs Mitchell up against the fence with a blistering punch combo, then adds an overhand right that has him briefly off-balance. Seconds later, a nice hook by Thiago, then a takedown. He doesn't want to work on the ground, so again he lets Mitchell up. Thiago seems to be bloodied about the bridge of his nose now. Mitchell is trying to track Thiago down with that left hook, but it's far too telegraphed. Nice right hand by Mitchell, but the crowd acts like it didn't happen. There's your hometown advantage. That works on the judges. Thiago opens up with a three-punch combo, finishing with a left hook that stings Mitchell. Thiago jumps onto Mitchell's back in the final twenty seconds, but can't finish the choke before the horn sounds. The crowd erupts as if he's just won the World Cup.

Paulo Thiago def. David Mitchell via unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

Rousimar Palhares vs. Dan Miller

Round 1:
Palhares starts with a leg kick, and Miller, sporting a vicious farmer's tan, fires off a jab in response. Palhares clinches and pulls guard, almost immediately going for an armbar. Miller defends and adds some punches, then backs out of it and stands up. Palhares throws out a front kick that clips Miller's chin on the way up, and he goes staggering back. Palhares rushes in and picks him up for a slam. Miller looks to be in trouble, but recovers remarkably quickly and puts Palhares on his back before getting back to his feet. Two big looping rights by Palhares, and Miller blocks both, but still takes some damage from. Palhares fires during a Miller kick and drops him. Flurry of punches from Palhares, but then he stops, apparently believing he won. Herb Dean didn't wave him off, but he goes and jumps on the cage to celebrate anyway. Miller tries to run and attack him there, but Dean stops it to explain the confusion. After the restart, Miller drops Palhares. It's getting wild. Palhares ends the round with another slam of Miller. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Palhares.

Round 2:
Palhares goes right back on the attack, stinging Miller with a punch and knee. He looks for a takedown, and Miller tries a guillotine that he has to give up on and eventually gets taken down. Ground-and-pound from Palhares and Miller turtles up. Palhares hears it from Dean for holding the fence for balance as he punches Miller. Miller tries a triangle off his back, but only gets slammed for his trouble. Palhares pours on the ground-and-pound with one heavy hook after another. Dean is taking a close look at the action, maybe thinking about stopping it. Miller is good and bloody now, and Palhares thinks about a leg lock before abandoning it in favor of punching Miller some more. Miller seems like he's just trying to survive the round, and he will. MMA Fighting scores it 10-8 for Palhares.

Round 3:
Palhares is looking a little tired after all that punching. Miller just looks like he put his face in a blender. Nice, straight punching by Miller gives Palhares something to think about early on. That jab is keeping him at a good distance for Miller. Miller lands a nice left hook, right straight. Palhares may have run out of gas. He's trying to coast home now, from the look of it. Miller is doing most of the work, but I don't know if he has enough left to finish, whcih he definitely needs if he wants to win this. Palhares backs up and shakes out his arms, while Miller steals a look at the clock. Looping, lazy right lands for Palhares, but there's not much behind it. Ten seconds left. It's desperation time for Miller, but he can't dig deep enough to find any reserves. They embrace to end the bout, and the crowd approves.

Rousimar Palhares def. Dan Miller via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-25)

Thiago Tavares vs. Spencer Fisher

Round 1:
Tavares slips on a kick attempt right off the bat, but he's back up. Didn't twist an ankle or anything. Tavares drops for the double-leg and nearly plants Fisher through the fence with it. Tavares steps over to half-guard as Fisher tries to wall-walk up the cage. Tavares works some short punches in close, but he's got his hands full just keeping Fisher there and can't think too much about how to damage him. The ref has seen enough and calls for a stand-up, and from where I'm sitting it looks as if Fisher might be bleeding from his nose. Tavares almost immediately looks for another takedown and manages to toss Fisher onto his back, but again, he can't do much with the American on the mat. Tavares gets to half-guard, then slips to full mount before Fisher manages to get to his feet, just before the round ends.

Round 2:
Tavares wastes little time trying to get the fight to the mat again, and once more Fisher is unable to stop him. Fisher is good at stalling his attack once they're on the floor, but he can't win this off his back. Fisher tries to wall-walk up, but Tavares peppers him with short lefts. Tavares steps over to side control and takes Fisher's back when Fisher tries to work to his feet. Fisher rolls to give up the mount, and Tavares blasts away at him with punches from the top. Fisher covers up, but he can't escape. Tavares keeps up the assault and the referee steps in to wave it off. Tavares celebrates on top of the cage, waving around the Brazilian flag and then lifting UFC matchmaker Joe Silva into the air.

Thiago Tavares def. Spencer Fisher via TKO (punches)

Luiz Cane vs. Stanislav Nedkov

Round 1:
They feel each other out early on as the crowd chant's Cane's nickname -- 'Banha' -- which I'm told means, simply, 'lard.' Cane times Nedkov's approach well and lands a sharp left, then spins away from any potential takedown scenario. Nedkov would like to get in close, but Cane's height and reach is making that difficult early on. Nedkov throws out a big looping right, and seems almost surprised when it lands squarely. Cane tries a head kick and slips, nearly giving Nedkov a chance to get him down. A stinging left from Cane hurts Nedkov. Cane's reluctant to follow up too heavily, and Nedkov comes back with a right. Low kick from Cane and Nedkov is on the mat briefly. Nedkov's nose looks to be smashed and bloodied. Another looping right followed by a left from Nedkov puts Cane in trouble. He's turned his back and Nedkov smells the finish. This placed just got quiet. He charges in and hammers Cane with a flurry that puts him down. A few more punches from the Bulgarian and it's over. Boos from the Brazilian crowd greet Nedkov at first, then a polite clap. Then more boos when Nedkov puts his hand to his ear, goading them.

Stanislav Nedkov def. Luiz Cane via TKO (punches) at 4:13 of round one

Dayum, I got all the FB prelims right but the rest wrong. Oh well...

Stay safe, Ben & Liddellfan.
