Part of me thinks they were toughening it out for the campaign anyways. They've waited the appropriate ammount of time to split without suffering the barrage of criticisms.

it was kinda crappy that the media and even sarah sorta through them into the spotlight like they did ... sure the media could've layed off, but they didn't have to bring them to the conventions and stuff ... etc .... they are young and there are enough pressures in their relationship and then to be thrown into the spotlight is just irresponsble
