Default Need help with pageant song ideas!

Come on talented musical forumites! My oldest daughter is entering our local Harvest Festival Pageant in September. She will be singing for the talent portion of the competition and we need song ideas.

Now normally, it wouldn't be terribly difficult-just a pageant-y type song, right? But this year's theme centers around the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and we want to be mindful of that.

So we need a song that goes with the theme without sounding cheesy. You know one of these little girls is gonna butcher Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" just to try for the emotional brownie points. We want her song to be a remembrance of the victims as a respectful memorial.

So far, we're thinking something like Josh Groban's "To Where You Are" or "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera, but we'd really welcome some suggestions. Even obscure sort of indie type songs--we're open to anything.

Thanks y'all!

Pretty sure she’ll have this one all to herself.

Oh gosh, I'm the last person to pick a good song. But I will be rooting for her! I guess I'm always moved by Sarah McLachlan's "In the Arms of the Angels" but that's more sad than patriotic. I like Dethbob's suggestion.

I just pictured the crowd going wild as she belted out "we'll put a boot up your ass its the American way". How old is she? here is a list. I really like the dC Talk one.

I think this one could work.

HA! Actually in my little redneck town, the boot in your ass song would probably go over really well...but it's not quite what we're going for here! lol.

I'm thinking about maybe doing a slide show behind her while she's singing-of images from 9/11 and the days afterwards if you guys don't think that seems exploitative. I'd like to have it focus more on how people came together afterwards to help.

And we're thinking now about "I Believe" by Blessed Union of Souls (minus the last verse, which talks about being a black man dating a white woman, which obviously doesn't make sense for her...lol)
Here are the lyrics:

Walk blindly to the light and reach out for his hand
Don't ask any questions and don't try to understand
Open up your mind and then open up your heart
And you will see that you and me aren't very far apart

'Cause I believe...that love is the answer
I believe...that love will find a way.

Violence is spread worldwide and there are families on the street
And we sell drugs to children now oh why can't we just see
That all we do is eliminate our future with the things we do today
Money is our incentive now so that makes it ok

But I believe...that love is the answer
I believe...that love will find a way...

"Only In America" - Brooks & Dunn
"Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" - Alan Jackson
"Some Gave All" by Billy Ray Cyrus
"500 Miles" by Rosanne Cash

God Bless America is also simple but always a hit!

Good luck to her!

Enya's "Only Time" is beautiful but might be a bit tricky to sing
