Nothing surprising about that. I also would not be surprised if James got a cut of the PPV revenues as well (but I don't know if that's the case). It may not seem "fair" given Toney's inexperience in MMA, but there is no doubt that the UFC sold this PPV as UFC vs Boxing and they needed James to play the part, which he did quite nicely. It's also worth noting that James turned down an offer from the UFC in January and called it a "joke", and the UFC still gave James another offer even though they never actually NEEDED him. So it's clear that even though Dana says James chased him all over the country, they were definitely interested in making this happen.
At the same time, the fact is this is likely the biggest payday James has seen in quite some time, as he is not a big PPV attraction in Boxing, and it's obvious that he barely put in any hard training and didn't fight for more than 3 and a half minutes. So, James can't complain about being under-compensated for this endeavor. |

You bet. I know the economics of the business but it still gets to me how Toney probably got paid more in one fight than some guys might make in a career!

Seems logical that if $500,000 is the number the UFC is releasing as his fight purse then James definitely took at least a small share of the PPV and maybe even some other types of bonuses or incentives, but I could be wrong. Even though James seems like he could potentially be convinced to fight for $50 and a bag of double-cheeseburgers, I still don't think Dan Goosen or Toney's team are quite as intoxicated from years of repeated blows to the skull. Just seems to me that they worked it out so they wouldn't have to put the entire amount down on paper for the public to see because they know the backlash won't be positive.
Also, being mad about Toney getting paid that much is understandable from the MMA perspective, but that's not how the business end of fighting works. It still boils down to good old fashioned capitalism, and no matter how much of a draw people think BJ Penn or Randy Couture is, it was James Toney and the "UFC vs Boxing" bullcrap that drove UFC 118. This is NO different than the type of money Brock Lesnar was making from the moment he came to the UFC. |
