Default Belfort: "I'm not waiting for Anderson"

From MMATorch.com -

Vitor Belfort was expecting to get his shot at the UFC Middleweight Champion this November, a shot he was initially scheduled for in April before getting sidelined with his shoulder injury; but with Anderson Silva out until the new year, Belfort is turning his attention elsewhere.

The longtime vet confirmed on Twitter that he will still be returning this November, and will not be fighting for the championship this year.

"This year I am not going to fight for the title because the champion is hurt," Vitor wrote. "But November we will be in action for sure that is what I can say."

The logical fight is with Chael Sonnen, who is coming off of the loss to Anderson Silva earlier this month in a fight he held control of for 22 minutes. With many fans believing Belfort did not earn his shot at the Middleweight Championship due to beating Rich Franklin in a 195 lb. catchweight bout, this would give him an opportunity to prove he deserves that fight by defeating the man who nearly beat "The Spider."

Whether his November appearance will come at UFC 122 in Germany, or the UFC 123 event a week later has not been revealed. If it comes at 123 it would likely be the night's co-main event behind the light heavyweight tilt between Lyoto Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Penick's Analysis: There was some speculation that the UFC owed Belfort a title shot after his win over Franklin, but that clearly appears to not be the case. Or, if it was in his contract, it's a clause he has waved as he doesn't want to sit out any longer than November. I hope to see the Sonnen bout to crown a true #1 contender and set up a February or March bout with Silva; that is, if they don't do Silva-GSP in Toronto. But I think Belfort-Sonnen makes a lot of sense. Otherwise it's a likely matchup against Yushin Okami, but that's not nearly as intriguing.
