Your right. He took the fight knowing that making weight was expected of him. I think there might have been added pressure because this fight was put on hold so many times. Who knows,... I did meet Thiago once, and know several people who know him, and he seem like a really nice guy. I bet it was as heartbreaking to him to not pull through with his weight as it was for everyone else. If dolce can indeed get him to be a healthy 170 the go for it,...other wise a move up to 185 is the only other option.

I don't like Alves as a fighter. Don't forget, he was caught with Spironolactone in his system, so he is a proven cheater. He knew days in advance of the Matt Hughes fight that he wasn't going to make weight. Instead of trying his best, he coasted into the fight with a huge weight and strength advantage. In the quote above, he admits that he could have made weight but took the "easier" road. I think it speaks volumes about his character.

That's a great quote, and like you said, I think it speaks volumes about his character. This is his job. It is his responsibility to make weight, and he has failed to do so again. As I posted before, I don't really think it will be a problem in the future, as I'm quite sure that Dana is going to make him fight at 185.

Maybe Matt will fight Dennis Hallman next, I'd like to see him avenge those two early losses in his career...

Agreed. He didn't even have to decency to give Matt a heads up & try to negotiate a catchweight in the days leading up to the fight. Instead, he let Matt completely dehydrate himself & then said "Oops, my ankle". Sheisty move.

Did anyone else here Joe during the PPV saying that Matt had to watch out for the guillotine while shooting because it's Ricardo's specialty & Matt's been caught by Hallman with it before? I was like " You're going kinda deep into the archives to reference a 1998 loss in Extreme Challenge 21, ain't cha Joe? "

Did anyone else here Joe during the PPV saying that Matt had to watch out for the guillotine while shooting because it's Ricardo's specialty & Matt's been caught by Hallman with it before? I've always wondered if Joe is fair to Matt considering Joe's an outspoken atheist. I believe it was Shane Carwin who he was interviewing after his loss to Brock who said to Joe something about thanking God and Joe got this half smirk on his face & did what looked like an eye roll.

If Alves can't make weight I don't think it's fair to may fighters that do, but I was thinking I read an article where Matt said he's never asked for a rematch before but he wanted one against Alves. Did I just make that up or did anyone else see it?

If I'm not mistaken, Joe went out of his way to make that reference, and was still completely off base, because he cited the guillotine as occurring during a loss to Hallman at UFC 29, which was incorrect because while Matt did lose to Hallman @ 29 it was by way of an armbar (if I'm not mistaken), the guillotine occurred in Matt's 5th pro bout, the 98 loss at Extreme Challenge 21, like you said...

That was a beautiful fight to watch. When they knelt together afterwards, I teared up. I was lucky enough to be watching that fight live in the arena. It's still one of my top 5 favorite fights. Joe Rogan will never feel what those two fighters felt kneeling in that octagon together.
