I would like to know that too...but I think the bottom line was that just some good ol fashioned Matt Hughes brute force. It's gotta take a lot of pressure from that position to really grind that in. Also, like Matt said after the fight maybe Ricardo just wasn't expecting that move or his brain a bit scrambled from that big left hook that put him on his butt.

I had to laugh when I first saw this thread in the sidebar because it read:
"Gracie brothers break down..." and I thought "...and cried" (following last night's fight results.

Anyway, good video, thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, Matt's winning choke wouldn't work for most people. Unless you have brute, farm-boy strength, you couldn't really put anyone to sleep with that. A skinny kid could learn the technique perfectly and still not be able to make it work.

It's easier than you'd think, actually. My coach just taught us the Farmaconda tonight in no-gi & I was getting guys to tap fairly easily, and I'm about as "skinny kid" as it gets!!

Practicing it and actually doing it are two different scenarios.....As is tapping out and PASSING out like good ol' Ricardo displayed nicely..
