Why did I think that you were allowed 1 pound over? Maybe I'm thinking of TUF?
I would be afraid if it was a sliding scale even more people would miss weight. I think the stiffer penalty no matter how much you're over might be more effective.

As far as the pound over... they do give it to you but I think it's stupid. The weight limit for WW is 170 but you can be 1 pound over... all that really does is change the weight limit to 171.... so I don't get it I guess.... just make the limit "officially" 171 with no extra allowed. That's what we have now basically.

Apparently they gave him the 2hrs & he still couldn't make it. What a joke:

Quote:
Thiago Alves (171.5) missed weight again for his welterweight showdown with Jon Fitch (170.5). Alves was given two hours to make 171, but he could not and will be penalized 20 percent of his purse, according to UFC.com. Previously the Brazilian missed weight against Matt Hughes in June 2008. He was also suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in 2007 after testing positive for diuretics.

He couldn't loose .5 in 2 hrs? Sad this is for a shot at the title.

The thing is in title fights they only get .5 of a pound that they can be over.

Really? I thought Matt always said it had to be 170 on the nose.

Well...I'll change that "really" into " I'm pretty sure" then

Title fights are exact scratch weight (170), and non-title fights are 1 pound over scratch (171).

Alves didn't say "screw it" if he was a half pound over, he really did try to make it. When he fought Matt, and came in three pounds over, that was a "screw it" situation.

Now, if it's true that they gave him two hours after he weighed in at 171.5, and he still didn't make it, there's no excuse for that.

How do you lose half a pound quickly?!

Give me details! I've got a fight party in AC to go to tonight and a black dress that fits okay as long as I don't breath...........

According the Sherdog, they gave him the 2hrs & he still couldn't make weight. That tells me he said "screw it, I don't wanna do the work. It's easier to take the pay cut & just fight as is."
