Elliot Sadler

Quote:
Before the start of the 2007 Daytona 500, Sadler was among many other drivers caught in a cheating scandal. Despite being docked 25 points, he still went on to score a season best 6th place finish. Sadler had many ups and downs throughout the season. In 2007, Sadler led 62 laps, posted two top-10 finishes and finished 25th in points. Sadler had the longest streak without a DNF than any other driver before failing to finish a race in 2007.

This EA game was released in the beginning of 2008 featuring Shawne Merriman

and then...

Quote:
During the 2008 training camp, Merriman had difficulty with his injured knee and sat out of practice for over two weeks. Initial reports were that his recovery would take a few weeks, but on August 23, Merriman reported that he had a tear in both his posterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament. He was told by doctors that he could sustain a possible career-threatening injury should he choose to play without having surgery. Merriman withheld his decision whether or not to play while seeking several different professional opinions, including that of well-known surgeon James Andrews of Birmingham, Alabama. ESPN's Mike Tirico in the Chargers' Monday Night Football game that Merriman went to Miami, Florida to get a final opinion on his knee. On August 27, Merriman told Fox Sports that he would go against the advice of the doctors and will try to play through the injury, stating that he simply wants to play and that the career-ending possibilities were "misquoted."

On September 9, it was announced that Merriman would indeed go through with the reconstructive knee surgery to repair his torn knee ligaments and would be placed on the Injured Reserve, missing the rest of the 2008 NFL Season.

Hockey is not immune...

matthughesfan21 mentioned Dion Phaneuf... well this game was released in Fall 2008 around the start of the 08-09 season

and then after having spectacular seasons before that...

Quote:
The 200809 season was a frustrating one for Phaneuf, as he recorded a career low 11 goals and 47 points,[5] and his poor plus/minus rating of −11 led fans to question his defensive commitment.[27] His poor season and high salary also led to speculation that Phaneuf might be traded.[28] In spite of his struggles, Phaneuf averaged 26 minutes and 31 seconds of ice time per game, fourth highest in the league.[27] He missed the final game of the Flames quarter-final series against the Chicago Blackhawks with broken ribs,[29] after battling a hip injury during the season.[30] Flames management defended Phaneuf, claiming that the injuries he battled affected his play.[31]
I'm telling you guys, it's an EA Sports Curse, not just a Madden Curse...

Oh, and before anybody asks why I put this thread in the UFC section, I did it because it is the logic I am using to pick James Toney over Randy Couture.

Chuck will LOVE this one...

Game: NFL Head Coach

Suspect: Bill Cowher

Release Date: June 2006

After going 11-5 and winning the Super Bowl in the 05-06 season, Cowher was put on the cover of this horribly boring football simulator in the Summer of 2006. Then the Steelers went 8-8 in the 06-07 season and Cowher retired.

This is just getting creepy now...

Andrew Flintoff.

This game was released within the same week of the beginning of this guys massive FAIL...

Quote:
After his previous stint as captain in the Test series against India, Flintoff returned as captain of the England team for the eagerly anticipated 2006-07 Ashes series in Australia. The series turned out to be a humiliating one for Flintoff, leading his side to five straight losses and thus losing the Ashes after having held them for the shortest time in history. In addition, he presided over England's worst ever defeat in an Ashes series, equalling the 1921 whitewash at the hands of the Warwick Armstrong-led Australian team in the wake of World War I.

Flintoff's own play in the 2006-07 series, both bowling and at the crease, was generally deemed disappointing. He made only two scores over 50 in the series, his best bowling figures were 4/99 in the first innings of the First Test in Brisbane, and he failed to get 5 wickets in a match. Flintoff played only one first-class game in the lead up to the series. He was initially undone by Australia's excellent seam bowling but his batting improved throughout the series as he got more match practice. A persistent ankle injury prevented Flintoff from bowling long spells at full pace and Australia's batsmen took advantage of this. According to Nasser Hussain during the tour he also had three or four warnings for inappropriate behaviour and binge drinking,[6][7] including arriving hungover for a training session.

It never ends...

Dany Heatly was drinking and smashed his Ferrari into a wall and killed his teammate Dan Snyder... 7 DAYS AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE GAME
(the game was released September 22 2003)....

Quote:
On September 29, 2003, Heatley was seriously injured after he lost control of the Ferrari 360 Modena he was driving. The car struck a wall, splitting the car in half and ejecting him and his passenger, teammate Dan Snyder. Heatley suffered a broken jaw, a minor concussion, a bruised lung, bruised kidney, and tore three ligaments in his right knee; Snyder was critically injured with a skull fracture and died six days later on October 5 of sepsis. Heatley was charged with vehicular homicide; he pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain a lane, and speeding. He admitted to drinking some prior to the incident, but his blood-alcohol content was below the legal limit. He was sentenced to three years probation, and the judge, Rowland W. Barnes, required the court to approve Heatley's vehicle, which could not have more than six cylinders and would not surpass 70 mph (112 km/h).[6] Heatley avoided having to go to trial as part of a plea deal that dropped the first-degree charge of vehicular homicide.[7]

Because of injuries he suffered from the car accident, Heatley's next season started in January 2004 and he appeared in only 31 games. A disappointing season ended with an early elimination in the race for a playoff spot and 25 points. During the last part of the season, the Thrashers and the Atlanta community, including Snyder's family, were largely supportive of him, including telling Atlanta prosecutors and the judge that nothing would be gained by imprisoning him.
EDITED UPDATE:A side note, EA actually removed Heatly from the cover and replaced him with Joe Sackic, but not before thousands of copies had already been sold.

Blake Griffin

Since NCAA players are not allowed to make money off the sport, a lot of the big time star Rookies who get drafted in the NFL or NBA end up on the cover of the EA NCCA game for that year (even though they aren't in college anymore)

Needless to say, Griffin was put on the cover of this game in the Fall of 09, and then he injured his knee the day before the start of the NBA season. He was out for several weeks, and by mid-season he was not recovering and was done playing for the rest of his rookie season.

This is really getting to be absurd. These aren't all little petty things either, some of these are some big time FAILS.
