Neal McDonough, who last week was indicated a near-lock by Deadline, confirmed that he will be taking the part of Dum Dum Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger in an interview with MTV.

Also of interest are McDonough's comments about the military unit, The Howling Commandos, and the role they play in the film. According to McDonough, the team may undergo a name change before shooting begins.

"It may change," the actor told MTV, "I'm reading a few things that it might change. But at this point, it still is [the Howling Commandos]."

Fans may recall that early reports had Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige claiming that The Invaders would fight along Captain America in the film, but it was later revealed that Feige was actually referring to The Howling Commandos.

Reasons for a name change are unknown as are the reasons behind it (be they creative or legal). What does seem certain at this point is that the members of The Howling Commandos will be present and that Neal McDonough will be among them.

Deadline New York says that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with Joss Whedon as director of The Avengers. First rumored to be on the short list by IESB, Whedon is now reportedly in final negotiations to helm the action adventure scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.

The film would feature many of the lead actors involved in Marvel Studios adaptations right now, including Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man" films), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and more.

Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.

Whedon's credits include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Angel," Serenity, "Dollhouse" and upcoming The Cabin in the Woods.

MTV caught up with Thor star Chris Hemsworth and asked him his thoughts about the casting of Chris Evans as Captain America. In the interview, he also mentions that The Avengers should start filming next January or February. You can watch the interview here:

Jeremy Renner may be close to locking a deal to star as Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye, in Joss Whedon's The Avengers, reports Heat Vision.

Since last year, rumors have persisted that Marvel has been after the star of The Hurt Locker to play the character, though official sources would not confirm that Hawkeye even has a role in the upcoming summer blockbuster, much less actor selection.

Renner talked exclusively with SuperHeroHype late last year, indicating that, while he'd love to join the Marvel Universe in some capacity, the film was too far off and, at the time, didn't even have a director. It appears that, with Joss Whedon now on board and pre-production moving forward, Renner may become an official member of the team yet.

The Hollywood trades got the scoop that Sebastian Stan, one of many whom originally tested for the lead role in Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America, has been cast as Bucky Barnes, Cap's sidekick to the previously-announced Chris Evans.

Like other actors, the star of the CW's "Gossip Girl" and before that, NBC's short-lived "Kings," has signed on to do five or six movies, but there's no word whether that might include any movies set in the present day or whether he'll appear in some form in The Avengers.

During World War II, Bucky Barnes was a teenage orphan too young to join the army, instead brought to the battlefield as a mascot. There, he discovered Captain America's true identity and convinced him to be his sidekick. He was subsequently killed while trying to defuse the exploding rocket that presumably also killed Captain America, but instead threw the war hero into the Arctic Circle where he was frozen for decades. Bucky was revived in recent years as The Winter Soldier, having been reprogrammed by the Soviets as an assassin.

With director Joe Johnston at the helm, The First Avenger: Captain America will begin filming in Europe over the summer for a scheduled release of July 22, 2011.

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio's highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed "The Red Skull." The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. As rumored, Tommy Lee Jones will act in Captain America: The First Avenger in a still-unknown role. Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter in the Joe Johnston-directed comic book adaptation, confirmed the news to LeicesterSquareTV. You can watch their interview with Atwell using the player below. They start talking about "Captain America" around the 2:20 mark.

Rumors place the "Men in Black" star in the part of General Chester Phillips, the military officer who chooses Steve Rogers for the super soldier program and who aided in his training soon after the serum took effect.

Phillips was retconned into continuity in "Tales of Suspense #63" in 1965, just two years after Captain America was brought to Marvel's forefront as the leader of the Avengers. Phillips remained a character in the Marvel universe until 2003 when he (now retired) was killed by assassins from the underwater rival-to-Atlantis continent Lemuria.

In addition to Atwell, Jones is joining Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Samuel L. Jackson and Dominic Cooper in the July 22, 2011 release.

Entertainment Tonight visited the set of Marvel Studios' Thor and has posted their first video of what will most likely be multiple ones. This one gives you a first look at the sets, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, plus interviews with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and director Kenneth Branagh. The comic book adaptation opens in theaters on May 6, 2011.

Overall, the movie looks pretty good, I just wish they had gone with a more medieval, fantasy-based outfit instead of the typical rubber Batman-suit.

Yeah, they definitely seemed to be flirting a lot, which is good for the film.

Dr. Strange News:

Donnelly and Oppenheimer are on board
Marvel Studios has hired screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write the script for Dr. Strange, reports Deadline New York. The duo wrote the upcoming Conan, video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and a draft of Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens.

In case you're not familiar with the character created by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, you can read a lot of information at Marvel.com.

The film could be the first one for Marvel Studios that gets distributed through Disney.

Patrick Dempsey is pitching himself for the role of Doctor Stephen Strange, reports Bleeding Cool, who also brings an artist's rendering of the "Grey's Anatomy" star in the role.

X-Men news:

Deadline New York's Mike Fleming is reporting that Alice Eve, the British actress who first appeared on the scene opposite James McAvoy in Starter for 10 and recently appeared in the romantic comedy She's Out of My League and in Sex and the City 2, is in talks to play the role of Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. Eve certainly has all the right elements for her to play Frost, already having a British accent and certain other attributes that were featured quite prominently in the "Sex and the City" movie. If she takes the role, it will reunite her with McAvoy, who has already been cast as Charles Xavier in the Marvel mutant prequel.

Frost was introduced in "Uncanny X-Men" #129 in 1980, created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne as The White Queen, a prominent member of the Hellfire Club, a group of wealthy mutants who used their power and powers to confound the X-Men, playing a key role in "The Dark Phoenix Saga." Later, Frost formed her own school for mutants, and her own team called the Hellions, before finally being brought into the X-Men fold by Charles Xavier (and writer Grant Morrison) and becoming a key member of the group for the past few years. A younger version of the character appeared briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Tahyna Tozzi.

X-Men: First Class is currently slated for a release on June 3, 2011.
