There wasn't anything "phantom" about it. Daley clearly threw a knee to the head of an opponent who was down on the mat, which is a violation of the rules. It doesn't matter if it smashes the fighter's orbital bone or if a single leg hair grazes them, it's illegal. It's not like a guy accidentally catching somebody in the balls when they are throwing leg kicks, or a boxer who mistakenly lands a rabbit punch during a wild exchange on the inside. When a guy is on his knees in MMA, you know you can't throw kicks or knees to their head. I can see instances where illegal knees can happen accidentally, but I'm not sure this case is one of them. He was moving backward to avoid the takedown and then he just whipped that left knee at him out of nowhere.

The sport does not utilize replays during the fights, and if anything it would fall under the umbrella of something that the commission would look at in a later review of the fight, but when it's that close it's tough for the ref to know if the hit actually landed or not. That's why 9 times out of 10, the benefit of the doubt will go to the person who was hit and a point will be deducted.
He threw the knee and it DID hit Josh. Was it solid contact? Nope. Did Josh play it up? Yup.

But it still hit him.

The difference between a foul tip and a single is fractions of an inch... but they're both considered contact.

I totally agree!

I will even take the baseball analogy a step further too...

Take a "strike" and a "ball". When an umpire has to make a call after a pitch, the lines he has to watch are somewhat imaginary. It's the same in Boxing and MMA when a ref has to use discretion as to what to actually deduct a point for. It's not always the same call every time and every ref is a little different.

If the hair is bad enough...have you ever really looked at that hair?

That's not the point though. This is an organized sport that has rules in place for a reason. Daley should not have been throwing the knee in the first place. Weather or not it barely grazed him or knocked his head off his shoulders is secondary.
