A father high on pot put 5-week-old baby in oven. A five week old baby boy was placed inside an oven and left overnight according to Kentucky police. The oven wasn’t on and the door to the oven was cracked open. The father, Larry Long who placed the boy in the oven was drunk and high on pot.

The police said that Long, 33, began smoking pot while he was at work, and when he returned home he shared a fifth of whiskey with his wife, Brandy Hatton. At some point during the drinking, they placed the baby in the oven. Long said that after four or five shots he went to bed while he wife stayed up and finished the bottle of whiskey.

At 5:30 am, Hatton heard the baby crying from the oven. The police arrived and found the baby inside the oven. The baby was taken to the hospital and wasn’t harmed.

Long called the mental health crisis line and told them about what he did to the baby, and the psychiatric facility called the police and reported it.

Long has been charged with first degree wanton endangerment and his bail has been set at $10,000.

The police said that Long blamed his actions on the pot, and said that he thought it was laced with a hallucinatory agent.

Custody of the baby has been given to members of the family.

New parents who are not mentally and emotionally ready to deal with a new born may do things that are harmful to the baby. Two weeks ago, a man in Utah couldn’t get his one month old baby to stop crying. So he shook the baby until it stopped crying. Unfortunately, the baby had severe injuries as a result. The father, Javier Junior Delgado was booked into the Utah County Jail a short time later.

The first thing that came to mind was sterlization (if only). Then they could get as drunk and stoned as they want and not have to worry about that pesky baby.

But then, that's the quandary, isn't it? We expect people to take responsibility. Then they don't and we make excuses for them..."well, the oven wasn't ON"..."they're only kids themselves"..."they had a rough childhood"..."the racist angry tea-partiers are to blame"...blah blah blah.

(OK, that last one I threw in just to stir the pot)

All that feel-good, hippy-dippy garbage from the 60's has come home to roost (to paraphrase Rev. Jerry) in our culture.

So the mother called the police and when they arrived, the baby was STILL in the oven? Did she leave it there so they would believe her when they arrived? I don't understand how the police arrived and found the baby in the oven.

Did they at least baste the baby?
