Default Chael Sonnen running for House of Representatives seat

Wednesday, February 10, 2010
UFC Middleweight Contender Chael Sonnen Tap Dances on Healthcare

Following his win over Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, Chael Sonnen put his MMA gloves down to get in a little work on his political chops.

Sonnen announced last week that he would seek political office.

"I have officially announced my candidacy for District 37 in Oregon for the House of Representatives," Sonnen told MMAWeekly.com.

Running as a Republican, the preliminary election for the seat takes place in May and the general election in November.

"(The position is) currently held by a Republican, and he's vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Fifth Congressional District," said Sonnen. "I was recruited by the party to fill his seat."

At Saturday night's post-fight press conference, while most questions centered on fighting, Top 10 rankings, and title shots, Sonnen had to field a question about the controversial health care bill currently sitting before the federal government.

"I'll tell you, it's a big bill. It's a federal bill. I'm just a state guy. I'm running for State Representative in Oregon, so I'm going to be a politician and dance around your question a little bit. It's a big bill and nobody fully understands it," he commented.

"I'm running as a Republican, but the one thing the president says that I really like, he comes out and tells the GOP, 'If you've got a better idea, bring it to me.' And the GOP hasn't done that. That's the side I'm on. It creates a frustration. There's still more dialog that needs to be done on that topic."

He did a little politico tap dancing, but whattaya think Oregon, is Sonnen gonna make it to your House?

That's pretty cool and even though I'm not a fan of the Democratic ways, the "bring me a better idea" does make sense. It's easy to criticize a plan. Let's see our Republicans propose some better ideas. I know they can do it.

I hope he sharpens his answers more. But I like Sonnen, he speaks his mind openly and honestly. I wonder where he stands on life issues?

Suggestions do not always = better idea.

Sonnen seems like a good guy, Lindland didn't get elected,
I am not sure if Sonnen will, though he has a huge following in the area.

yeah i see where youre coming from. politics in general is just dirty. both parties make a big deal over stupid things like bowing or writing on your hand. its all just to make the other party look bad so they can win. I have about as much trust in either party as I do in msnbc or fox news giving me real news.

he does not have a chance.

1. politics require a lot of effort a to win he'd have no time to train. you cannot win a state seat w/o knocking on doors and kissing babies. So i doubt he will set aside mma training to run with a chance to win.

2. Even as a state house member you must know the issues and he is clueless

Yeah...and the U.S will never ellect a "person of colour" to the Presidency.

I say when the time comes, give us the information on all candidates and let us make an informed decision. He might do really well.

Some of them sounded better to me! The 2 I can think of off the top of my head are,
1-Getting rid of insurance companies anti trust exemption!
2-Allowing people to buy insurance across state lines!
