Default Compensation of Religious Nonprofit Executives

There is an article in the November 7th edition of World Magazine about compensation for Executives of Religious Nonprofit Organizations. The article focused mostly on the pay of Franklin Graham, who is an executive for Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. I was shocked to see that Graham made $633,722 with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and $308,826 with Samaritan's Purse. I don't think that Graham is a charlatan; however, I find that to be a very high salary for someone who works for an organization that functions from donations. I would bet that the average giver has a family income of $50,000 or less. I don't know the average income for a pastor but I would bet that it isn't very high.

I sponsor a child with World Vision and I was disappointed to see that they pay the President of World Vision a salary of $336,472. It costs about $300-$400 to sponsor a child for a year. They should cut the salary in half and they could provide care for a few hundred children.

What do you think is an acceptable salary for an executive at a Christian charity?

Personally I think they should get fair market value for whatever their position is. If a CEO in the private sector earned the same as Franklin Graham for running a similar business then I have no problem with it.

It's when the pastors make these outrageous salaries that I get frustrated... but that's just me...
