I donated blood on Tuesday and was eligible to donate red blood cells on that cool machine that takes it out, seperates it, and then puts the plasma and saline back in your body. First of all it was awesome! I love giving blood. This donation is close to me, because I've lost my father and uncle to cancer. They told me not to go to conditioning that night so I didn't, but the next night I went and was still really rundown. Is this because of the red blood cells missing.

Yes, a lower red blood cell count than what your body is used to will make you feel run down and tire very easily. They carry your oxygen for your tissue to use. Hydrate and eat iron rich foods:

best sources:
Clams
Pork Liver
Oysters
Chicken Liver
Mussels
Beef Liver

good sources:
Beef
Shrimp
Sardines
Turkey

PS-My son had to have a transfusion at age 4. He almost died from an internal bleed in his gut. So giving blood means a lot to me too.

I love beef liver so much!! Yes, donating blood is so vital. Its really something everyone if they can should do at least once a year..

Beef liver is very high in vitamin A so pregnant women should not eat it without asking their OB doc. But yeah, a big ole plate of liver and onions....YUM!!!

My HB which is iron level (as I understood) was 16.something. they seemed quite happy with that and my BP was 110/80...
The bad part about it is I have ot wait 120 days before donating red blood cells again.

Your body needs that much time to make more. I have also done the packed cells donation. I have donated plasma before too. The HGB level is good but right now you have fewer RBC's to carry the iron and oxygen.

very good to know!

I like learning

Do they still pay for plasma? Not that it would be my soul motivation...
