Shane Carwin drops out of Roy Nelson fight due to knee injury

Quote:
If there really is a 2012 injury jinx in mixed martial arts, it's sticking around until the bitter end.

UFC president Dana White announced via Twitter on Wednesday that Shane Carwin is out of his Dec. 15 Ultimate Fighter Finale coaches' fight in Las Vegas against Roy "Big Country" Nelson. A torn knee is the culprit.
"WOW!! It never ends Carwin blew his knee out. Looking for a new opponent for Roy on the TUF Finale on FX," White tweeted.

The injury continues a run of bad luck for Carwin, a former UFC interim heavyweight champion. A series of injuries have hampered the 37-year old Coloradan, keeping him out of action for the past year and a half. He hasn't won a fight since his quick knockout of Frank Mir on March 27, 2010.
No immediate replacement was named for Carwin for the bout at the Hard Rock Casino.

The Carwin news marks the third fight fallout of the week: Anthony Perosh had to pull out of his Dec. 14 bout with Joey Beltran due to a broken toe and was replaced by Igor Pokrajac; and a brain injury suffered in training has sidelined Eddie Yagin from his planned UFC on Fox 5 match against Dennis Siver.

Roy Nelson vs. Matt Mitrione slated for TUF 16 Finale in December

Quote:
In a battle of former TUF 10 cast members, Roy Nelson will now meet Matt Mitrione at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale on Dec. 15 in Las Vegas, MMAFighting.com learned from sources close to the event.

When contacted by MMAFighting.com, both Mitrione, as well as Nelson's camp declined to comment on the pending fight. According to sources, though, both fighters have verbally agreed to meet next month.

The news comes just a day after Shane Carwin pulled out of the Nelson bout due to an injured knee.

Mitrione (5-1) hasn't fought since Oct. 2011 due to injuries and timing issues. He most recently lost to Cheick Kongo at UFC 139 via unanimous decision. He was scheduled to meet Phil De Fries at UFC 155 on Dec. 29 but that fight is no longer happening. No word just yet on who De Fries will fight next.

Nelson (17-7) most recently knocked out Dave Herman at UFC 146. He is currently a coach, opposite Carwin, on TUF 16.

The heavyweight tilt, scheduled for five rounds, will serve as the main event of the FX-televised card.

This is so dumb! Carwin should be released or suspended! He knew he was injured like 3 weeks ago yet said it was nothing to worry about! And now 3 weeks or whatever the time is before the actual fight he pulls out!?!?! BS!

I disagree about him being suspended or released. He obviously tried to work through it and it got worse or maybe it is the other knee since the article doesn't say.

FYI, GSP tried to work through a knee injury too before damaging it worse.

Maybe I am a little bitter because I like Carwin. I met him when he was in college and my friends played college football with him. He has an amazing work ethic and I am sure he tried to fight through it.

Oh and to add to the injury list, Grey Maynard is out against Lauzon. Jim Miller is replacing him.
