Ben, when I started out I got some simple everlast pro-style gloves (they sell at Modell's here). I think they run about 30 bucks. more imprtantly you two need to get mouth pieces, and handwraps.
I think it's worth the extra money to go with these http://www.piranhagear.com/p-625-pir...ng-gloves.aspx
I've been using these for a few months and love them. Sparring, bagwork, mitts, everything. They are great quality. CrisCo got some too.

Thanks for the advice, man! I've done some price shopping & here's what I ended up buying:

Shock Doctor Gel Max Mouthguard & Anti-Biotic Case ($16.25):

Everlast Cotton Handwrap 3-Pack ($12.95):

Grey 16oz. Everlast Pro-Style Training Gloves ($28.32):

I'm not certain I got the absolute lowest price on each of these, but I'm happy with what I found.

They make them in 16oz and in an mma type glove.

This is what we use for simple "kickboxing" sparing.. and in tourneys..

you can get punched in the face a bit hard.. no damage.. fingers are cover but you can still grapple and the thumb is free.

Those pro style are great for what you want to do. I have the generation before, and I got a lot of use out of them.
Good work.
