UFC fighter Matt Grice is in the intensive care unit at Oklahoma University Presbyterian Hospital Monday morning after he was seriously injured in an car accident.

Grice, 32. was hit from behind while at a red light in Pottawatomie County in Oklahoma, near Oklahoma City and Norman, according to a news report from Oklahoma City's News 9 on Sunday night.

Grice was reported in critical condition and was to undergo brain surgery on Sunday.

The hospital on Monday confirmed Grice as being in the intensive care unit but would not release anymore information.

Grice is an Oklahoma high school wrestling legend. He was a four-time state champion, and three-time most outstanding wrestler in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was the only person in the history of the wrestling-rich state to accomplish the latter. Grice was one of the most highly recruited wrestlers in the country coming out of high school. He went to the University of Oklahoma, but a series of injuries plagued his career. He debuted in MMA in 2005 and has had two stints with the UFC. He went 1-3 from 2007 to 2009 as a lightweight. He returned in 2011 as a featherweight, and has gone 1-2.

Grice works as a police officer in Oklahoma City besides fighting in the UFC.

In his most recent fight, he lost to Dennis Bermudez at UFC 157 on Feb. 23 in Anaheim, Calif. Grice showed amazing toughness in losing a split decision in what was one of the best fights of 2013.
