Funny that you should post this today. I am actually watching one of my favorite movies regarding religion right now. Not God mind you.. but religion.

It's worrying to think that there'd be people in the world feeling like the only person that they can trust is their Priest and that may not even be the case.

A lot of Roman Catholic Churches dont follow the Roman Rules, and, the Roman Rules have changed. In Medieval times, it was thought that the Priests actually did have the power to forgive...this, again goes back to the Roman pinnicle that Saint Peter was given special powers to bind up, and release, on both a spiritual and temporal level. This gift, they presume is passed to each of his successors, and its under them which the Priest works.
This is wrong on three main levels, firstly, there is nothing indicative of the original petran gifts being transferable. Secondly, even if they were, there is nothing to say that they can be passed from one man (namely the Bishop of Rome) to any Priest associated with him. Finally, this assumes that the power lies with the person, and therefore the church, and not GOD. People believed, for example, without a Roman Catholic Burrial they could not asscend to Heaven, Rome absolutely believed this, because the first thing they did when King Henry threatened to break from Rome, is order the priests to cease the burrial of the dead. Thereby stopping anyone who died in the country from getting into Heaven, in the same way an Ex-Communication from the Bishop of Rome, exquated to having been judged and sentanced to Hell. In the same way, the Roman Church set up a system whereby if you were found lacking, you could say a number of prayers and obtain forgiveness, effectively, a works based salvation that was composed entirely by Rome. At the height of the Roman Church (which is long since passed) these penances were bought and sold with cold hard cash. The Roman Church has changed its mind According to Rome, Priests themselves cant forgive, however, they can remind and confirm to their flock that GOD has forgiven the person, if they confess their sins. As the liturgy, which is still used in the Anglican Church during the Celebration of Holy Communion says. Pope John-Paul the second, declaired that Purgatory no longer exists, he rejected that dogma...but here is my problem with this Catholics...how come none of their Popes aggree with each other?? How can one create a dogma, and another remove a piece of dogma They cant answer that one. They cant explain to me how its possible for Rome to change its mind, and for their to be differing opinions from a succession of spiritual same individuals, who are supposedly each infallable in theology. They cant even explain how they know Peters successor got the same gifts as Peter! Its one HUGE assumption. Illogical, Irrational, contradictory...in short...plain false. There is no such thing as true appostolic succession. Without which, the Roman Catholic Church ceases to exist by default of its very definition. That is why I am Anglo-Catholic...and NOT Roman Catholic
