Silly Question about "Gi"

from a BJJ perspective geberaly gi colour means nothing from what I understand, its personal preference. and it tends to be BJJ gis that have the patches all over them, and so for reasons beyond my unserstanding cost 3 times as much as a plain judo gi which does the job just as well.
