The cartoon is better, but this was not bad either.

I saw it for the first time when it came out on DVD. I give it 2 stars out 5.
It definitely worked hard to beat the audience over the head with it's anti-military/anti-capitalism themes while simultaneously promoting an environmental-extremist world view along with goddess worship. The only thing that really makes it watchable are the visual effects, but even those are less than impressive, since the Navi aliens move a little too smoothly and weightlessly to be completely convincing. The only thing really groundbreaking about the visuals is simply the number of CG elements on the screen at the same time. But I think Lord of the Rings still trumps Avatar there and LOTR at least had a compelling story and interesting characters to captivate audiences.
