You could run a half marathon and still gas in the second round. I've seen it myself, a buddy of mine is in incredible shape, but for whatever reason, be it mental/a difference in aerobic/anaerobic, or not peaking at the right time, his legs were sluggish, his arms acted like they weighed 200 lbs.
