VCU defeats No.19 Memphis, gets ready for No.5 Duke

Quote:
VCU defeated No.19 Memphis in tonight’s opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, a game that saw the Rams’ fast-paced havoc system and a youth movement lead them to the big 78-65 upset win.

The Rams came out firing on all cylinders, out-running and wreaking havoc on the Tigers to the tune of a 14-point halftime advantage.

After watching their lead cut to just two with 4:06 left on the clock, VCU went on a 12-0 run behind junior Rob Brandenberg and sophomore Treveon Graham, and punched their ticket to a semi-final matchup against the 5th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.

Graham lead all players with 26 points on the evening, a career high.

The sophomore expected to fill much of the void left by the graduation of senior Bradford Burgess, hit a layup to give the Rams a four-point lead with 3:49 to play, then put the nail in the coffin with a rare four-point play, giving the Rams a 14-point lead with just 1:25 left on the game clock.

Rob Brandenberg was huge during that stretch as well, hitting two threes in a matter of 44 seconds, giving the junior guard 15 points on a perfect 5-5 from long range for the evening.

The Rams once again lead the turnover battle, getting 22 out of Memphis, 14 coming from VCU steals.

The black and gold turned the ball over 17 times themselves in tonight’s track meet, but blasted Memphis from long range, hitting 13-of-22 three balls, a ridiculous 59.1% clip, good for 11 more makes than the Tigers who hit just 2-of-7 on the night.

VCU sharpshooter Troy Daniels accounted for the threes Graham and Brandenberg weren’t hitting, taking all of his eight shots from behind the line and hitting four of those attempts, good for 12 points in the win.

The Rams will advance to take on an undefeated Duke (4-0) squad who dispatched Minnesota earlier today 89-71.

Game tips Friday at 7PM on NBC Sports Network.

The Short Story: Behind a career-high 26 points from Treveon Graham and 13 three-pointers, the Rams took down 19th-ranked Memphis, 78-65, in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. MEMPHIS STARTERS: #0 Ferrakohn Hall, #1 Joe Jackson, #3 Chris Crawford, #4 Adonis Thomas, #10 Tarik Black

How It Happened
  • From the tip, Havoc was on display, forcing turnovers from Memphis on four of their first six possessions as the Rams ran out 12-4 lead on back-to-back three-pointers from Graham and senior Troy Daniels.
  • More turnovers and more three-pointers, this time from Graham and Brandenberg, helped the Black & Gold claim its largest lead of the game at 16, 35-19, with 6:15 remaining in the first half.
  • Back-and-forth buckets sent the teams into the halftime break with VCU leading 42-28.
  • As expected, the Tigers didn't go away quietly, fighting back in the start of the second half to get within three at 50-47 with 12:12 left.
  • That's when Graham stepped up and hit a huge three-pointer and was fouled to push VCU's lead back to seven at 54-47.
  • Once again, Memphis would respond, going inside and getting three straight buckets, including a jumper from Tarik Black that brought the Tigers within two at 63-61 with just over four minutes to play.
  • But once again, VCU answered with a huge layup from Graham and two back-breaking three-pointers from Brandenberg that ultimately sealed the deal and secured the 78-65 upset for the Black & Gold.
Beyond the Box Score
  • The Rams are now 5-3 against top-25 teams under Coach Smart and company.
  • VCU has now taken down a top-25 in each of Coach Smart's four seasons at VCU.
  • For the first time in school history, the Rams hit 13 or more three-pointers in back-to-back games.
  • VCU is now shooting 55.3% from beyond the arc in the two games outside of the Siegel Center.
  • The Rams have now record 14 or more steals in three of their four games this season.
