This one might have been over with the final horn of the last game, as the Winthrop Eagles ran into an angry group of Rams in a 90-54 Saturday matinee beatdown in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The black and gold jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead, then after a hot second half start by the Eagles that saw the lead cut to 13, hit the extra gear once more, throttling Winthrop in the second half and picking up the Rams first road victory of the season.

VCU got back on track in several statistical categories, upping their 50% free throw mark from last game to 85% today, hitting an impressive 17-20 from the stripe in the win.

The Rams also got their havoc machine cranked up once more, forcing 21 Winthrop turnovers, getting a deep 34 bench points and hit 52% of their 25 three-point attempts.

Juvonte Reddic once again lead the Rams in scoring, posting 17 points and a team high seven rebounds in the win. Reddic was one of five Rams in double digits, a list that includes sophomore’s Briante Weber and Treveon Graham with 14 a piece, Troy Daniels back from injury with 11 on 3-4 shooting from long range, and newcomer Melvin Johnson who posted 12 points while going 2-3 from long range, his first double digit performance in just the third game of his career.

Darius Theus just missed that group with nine points of his own, but dropped a game-high seven assists in the win.

VCU jumped out to 22-point first half lead after being up by as many as 26. The Eagles bounced back however by hitting six of their first 10 shots, including four deep balls in the first six minutes of the second half.

Winthrop kept things within a 14-point reach with 11:30 left to play, but then saw the Rams go on a 30-8 run to end the game.

VCU moves to 2-1 on the season heading into a stacked Battle 4 Atlantis Thanksgiving weekend tournament.

The Rams will get an opening round challenge in 17th-ranked Memphis at 7PM on Thanksgiving night, followed by a second round battle against either Minnesota or the 6th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.

Depending on how things play out, VCU will play one of the four teams on the other side of the bracket, a group that includes Louisville, Northern Iowa, Missouri and Stanford.

All of those games will be available for viewing on the NBC Sports Network.
