So maybe Nick should take some pointers from Chael who's a natural at playing the game.
I think you're right; he's always got to be the noncomformist, the badass who's not going to dance to anyone else's tune but his own and to hell with anyone who doesn't like it. "Go along to get along" is most definitely a foreign concept to him.
He's determined to be his own worst enemy.
