There's a difference between what's considered doing your job in trying to stop the other team from advancing with the ball and scoring, and from getting paid money to injure and take out the quarterback. Sounds more like a thug or a hitman.
Exactly, intention of injuring is a criminal act rather than doing what is necessary to prevent the other team from advancing. People know you're going to get hurt when playing football, that's just a fact, but this is definitely the act of a thug.
