if it's a race you are really willing to pace/challenge yourself, aim for 7-8 mins a mile. I run daily now--and when i'm pushing myself, i can get my time down to 8 mins/mile.
Most of the time though, when it's just a typical day, i'll do 8-10 mins/mile. Building endurance is something that takes time.
Keep at it! any fitness regimen takes time, but the yielded product is something to feel accomplished with
