Strikeforce cancels 2nd consecutive event, but promises an "epic show next year"

At this point, Strikeforce is in the same realm that DREAM resided in late last year. After DREAM 17 on September 24th 2011, the promotion promised to give the fans another card that featured Brett Rogers vs. Tim Sylvia along with a rumored Todd Duffee fight in a possibly heavyweight grand-prix. Things sort of collapsed for the promotion and they were forced to co-promote with M-1 Global and Inoki Genome Federation to compete their Fight For Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoka 2011 bantamweight tournament. After it ended on New Year's Eve last year, the promotion insisted that it would have yet another card in 2013 that featured Shinya Aoki as a headliner along with the newly formed ONE FC. Unfortunately, nothing happened -- not even a glimmer of an MMA event. DREAM eventually closed shop just a few months ago -- leaving a massive void into what was a strong Japanese MMA scene.

This morning a press release came from Strikeforce announcing the promotion has canceled their November event due to a long string of injuries on the card. Keep in mind, this comes just days after it was reported by multiple sources that Showtime intends to part ways with the Strikeforce brand. In fact this morning I received a call from a Strikeforce fighter that started with 'Dude, is my fight really canceled?' This person had no prior knowledge of the cancellation from ZUFFA or Showtime -- which makes one wonder if any of the fighters were given notification before the press release this morning.

However, Strikeforce does promise to hold 'an even bigger Strikeforce event on Showtime early next year,' which indicates that if it's bigger than the purposed November 3rd card, Ronda Rousey (or a UFC fighter) must be included in the card. It's impossible to have something 'bigger' with the same components as the previous. That's why the term 'bigger' was invented.

I don't think you are going to get Rousey on the card as I honestly think the Cyborg fight happens, but they will save that for a bigger venue. I could see the following fights happen:

- Daniel Cormier vs Frank Mir
- Daniel Cormier vs Fabricio Werdum

- Gilbert Melendez vs Eddie Alvarez

I guess with the timing most likely for January you could have a card with all the champions. And with the rumor of Strikeforce folding it would be an awesome last event.
