Pat weighs in on Jon Jones/UFC 151

ďI understand the pressure that Zuffa is under with the Fox deal, FX deal, and all that stuff. By putting on a massive number of cards, I think theyíve stretched themselves a bit thin. The quality of the cards has gone down, and I think everybody has noticed that, not just myself. When you have a card that is only carried by one match, given the attrition rate in MMA, the injuries in training, they kind of set themselves up for the fall.

They need to hold themselves accountable. Itís become a bit of a habit, of late, by the leaders, to blame others for their problems, instead of letting people hold them accountable. Itís across the board in a lot of different spectrums of life right now.

I think that Jon Jones not taking a fight with a guy whoís not five foot eleven, heís six foot two, or six foot three, whatever he is, heís much bigger than Henderson, is ok. Heís younger and probably moves a little better. Dan, obviously can kill a bull with his right hand, but heís a little older now, and Sonnen is a lefty, so itís really a different fight.

I think Jon Jones had nothing to gain in that fight. Sonnen, moving to a different weight division, having not fought there for quite a long time, and competing at 185, hasnít earned the right in the first place. I think Jon Jones was well within his rights, and I back Jackson on the decision that he made and the advice that he gave Jones to pull out of the fight. It doesnít do the UFC any good to chop the legs out from possibly their biggest star, because he doesnít take a last minute replacement fight. There was nothing to gain for his career. I think itís organizational suicide to do that to your biggest star.Ē

He does speak a lot of truth there. But, I don't agree that Jones had nothing to gain by taking the fight. Even though he's not the one that set this house of cards up, he was being asked by his boss to step up and help save it. I think that would have gone a long way in the eyes of Dana/UFC that he was willing to risk a last minute change-up to basically save their @$$. That would have gained him a lot of good will that he might be able to cash in on later. I think he was shortsighted with his decision. JMTCs :)

I agree with Pat, although I do think JBJ should have taken the fight, I also figured he had earned enough "good will" in his previous 18 months to NOT get thrown under a bus by not taking the fight. Shogun & Machida won't fight on 30 days notice in Toronto. That, IMO, is worse. So we end up with another 185'er stepping in, who wasn't even in line for a shot at Silva any time soon. Yawn.

Well, Pat speaks some truth there, but JBJ did tweet this on May 12, 2010:

So, JBJ is full of ****!
