What is your favourite Psalm...and why?
I shall tell you mine later
Noone likes the Psalms
Noone can be arsed to reply more like
So...I tell you mine. My Most favourite Psalm is Number 130. For Christmas 1997 my Nan bought me a tape of Terry Oldfields interpretation of this Psalm set to music, supposed to be for the purposes of relaxation. It was especially poignent because at the time my faith had been thrown into crisis by the death of my Grandad (Nans Husband) who had died at the end of September from Secondary Cancer that had gone from his back to his brain...he had previously had bowel cancer in 1993 and had to have large sections of his intestines removed, obviously the procedure wasnt quite as successful as first thought. I call this year of my life The First Great Questioning, and this Psalm was, I suppose the call for help that I needed at the time.
A song of ascents.
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.
Here is a short excerpt of the music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWlpm8-y58A
The other Psalm I like is 122, purely because of having heard a musical version which is absolutely fantastic
A song of ascents. Of David.
1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
2 Our feet are standing
in your gates, Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is built like a city
that is closely compacted together.
4 That is where the tribes go up—
the tribes of the Lord—
to praise the name of the Lord
according to the statute given to Israel.
5 There stand the thrones for judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.”
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your prosperity.
...and the music of course :ashamed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5u6-CpU-1EY
Psalm 51. Because it clearly shows that King David was a man after God's own heart.
