WEC moved to October 10
- HENDERSON INJURED, WEC 43 MOVED TO OCTOBER 10 (UPDATED)
Monday, August 24, 2009 - by Ken Pishna (Additional reporting by Damon Martin) 22-BenHenderson_WEC40weigh_5589.jpg WEC 43, originally slated for Sept. 2 in Youngstown, Ohio, has hit a bit of a snag and will be pushed back to Oct. 10 and moved to a different venue. The fight card, however, will remain intact with a main event bout pitting Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone against Ben Henderson to declare a WEC interim lightweight champion. In fact, the main event remaining intact was a key reason for the delay. According to Ben Henderson’s manager, Jason Genet, “(Henderson) had a slight physical issue that he had to deal with and the WEC and Cerrone were gracious enough to give us a little more time to make sure he’s 100-percent ready.” Genet said that he would rather not discuss the specifics of the injury. Cerrone told MMAWeekly.com, “It sucks that we can’t do it on Sept. 2 like we planned, but I’m just glad that we’re still gonna do it in October. I bet (current WEC lightweight champion Jamie) Varner is excited he gets to hold onto his belt a little bit longer.” WEC officials were not immediately available for comment at the time of publication, but later issued a press release confirming the postponement and a change of venue. “An injury to main event fighter Ben Henderson forced the postponement of the event. The entire card has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, at a venue to be announced at a later date,” read the statement. http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...=9443&zoneid=2 |
