Nate? or others? Gun Question

So I've never fired a gun before, never really had the opportunity. Was going to go with my neighbor one time but we never got around to it and he moved.

I've looked at some gun ranges and I'm going to go with a buddy of mine soon. They have plenty of guns to rent. My question is, what should I start with seeing as how I've never fired a gun before? I could research it sure, but I'd rather hear from people in here that I know and trust from their own gun experience then read what some "expert" has to say.

Well, you could do what I did: join the Army. I'm sure they'd teach you.

Seriously though, it's definitely best to go with someone who has experience with firearms for your first time. Are you mainly just wondering what kind of weapon to choose? Are you leaning more towards a rifle, a pistol or a shotgun? You might want to avoid the shotgun for your first time. If you want to shoot a pistol, then anything 9mm would be fine. I'm not really that knowledgable about rifles, so maybe someone else can make a good recommendation on that.

If you're concerned about the amount of kick you could start with something small caliber like a .22 and work your way up towards 9mm, .357, .44 and .45. Caliber isn't the only thing that determines kick but it's a good place to start.

Shooting a shotgun is a lot of fun because it's easy to hit your target. Birdshot has a low kick compared to buckshot.

I don't have much experience with rifles but they'd probably be a lot of fun to shoot too.

honestly? get you two really nice bb guns---one a rifle and one a handgun.

shoot them alot and whenever it works for you, you don't have to go to a range to shoot air rifles, yet they are still dangerous so be careful.

once you get good at shooting you can move up in size and according to what you want to do----hunt, shoot, home protection, militia (LOL), collect or whatever---

if you just want to shoot and learn and enjoy, an air rifle is the best----cheap guns, cheap ammo, no need for a range, less power and danger, less regulations if you live in town

eventually you will come on here and ask us what gun to hunt with, or what gun to buy for home protection or what gun for long range or what is the most fun

To answer your question, hand gun. I'm not sure about hunting with a rifle. I don't really have any friends that hunt. I might enjoy it, but just don't know the people.

Why a handgun? Mostly so that I know how to use one should I need to. I'm not sure yet if I will purchase one, but I figure I should know how to shoot. I think it will lead towards the purchase but I'm just not "there" yet.

Thanks for the responses thus far. :)
