Renzo Gracie, the great MMA fighter and coach, is a guest on my blog ahead of his UFC debut in Abu Dhabi on April 10. Gracie, from the legendary family which is synonymous with jiu-jitsu, trains fighters in the United States and is a veteran of the sport. He faces Matt Hughes, the two-time welterweight champion, in the first staging of a UFC event in the United Arab Emirates.

By Renzo Gracie

Iím preparing for my UFC fight at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on April 10. It will be the first UFC ever in the Middle East, the first UFC ever to take place outdoors and, for me, the first time I have ever fought in the UFC.

I have been a professional mixed martial artist since 1992, and my family helped create the very first UFC event in 1993, but I have never fought in the UFC myself. I came close several times in my career, but it never worked out. Now, aged 43, I will finally fight in the Octagon, against Matt Hughes, the two-time former champion.

Hughes beat my cousin, and the first ever UFC champion, Royce Gracie four years ago and this isnít a fight for revenge but to restore family pride.

Matt Hughes is a very strong fighter, he has great wrestling and takedowns. He is dangerous. My strength is Gracie jiu-jitsu, which was an art created by my family years ago in Brazil where the opponentís strength is used against him.

I have been at home in New York, training. I was training with current UFC welterweight champion George St-Pierre, who has fought Hughes three times and beat him twice. Georges defended his title on Saturday in Newark against Englandís Dan Hardy.

I was going to go to Abu Dhabi very early, but I stayed to help Georges prepare. He looked very good in training. This is the first time I have trained with him, his BJJ is very, very good and heís improved every day. He is amazing. I cannot believe how quickly this guy picks things up.

Hardy was always going to have a hard time. He had a puncherís chance, and if he didnít land quickly, the reality was he would be on his back and Georges would control him.

A puncherís chance is like a going into a bull-fight where you have to load one bullet into a big rifle and the bull has a head start. You can land your shot, but you have one chance and it isnít good odds.

Training with GSP is great for me, too. In reality, his takedowns are amazing. It is the timing, he can time them perfectly to get you off balance and he shoots in very quickly. This is great preparation for me for Hughes, who I very much want to beat.

I see this fight ending just like the fight with Royce. It is going to be an old fashion beat down.

With that said, Renzo is a class act and in every interview I have read, he has shown nothing but respect for Matt! That makes him okay in my book!:)

They don't know much about Matt Hughes the nine time ufc ww champion. For some reason I have a hard time believing this was a mistake:punch:

I actually mett Reno tonight.... I worked security for him when he did a 2 hours meet and greet.

I was VERY impressed by the man.. we talked for a long while about BJJ and martial arts in general...

During the meet and greet he was warm to everyone..

One guy did say... "You are going to smash that has been next moth!!!"

Renzo said.... "Has been? He is 37 I am 42.... this is going to be a good fight"

I talked to him for about 20 minutes during.. and met up with him before.. to bring him to the location..

He was just a great guy...

I am still a huge Matt Hughes fan.. and I will give respect to anyone that fights... and I didn't want to like Renzo.. but damn.. he is likable... I still want to see Matt continue to remodel the House that Gracie built!!!

WARRRRRRR HUGHES!!!!!!

Yes you are correct, he has been a class act, and he would be a dam fool not to respect Matt, so this will be a very good fight, I see it as one of the best battles of the year, But it is not meant to be for Renzo, mid way into round two, Matt will submit him.:cool::cool:

I think even at 43 Renzo is a better opponent than Royce was. Renzo has much better hands than Royce and is equally good on the ground. Should be a good fight. I am predicting Matt will earn his first KO from standing strikes. Hughes in the 2nd.

This is what worries me about this fight. I haven't seen Hughe's standup in a while...has it improved any? I'm concerned that, while Matt can and probably will get teh takedown, I'm thinking Renzo's gonna at least defend more than a few of them.

I don't really think Hughes will have a problem in this fight. He'll get the takedowns without too much bother and he doesn't seem to have too much problem on the ground with BJJ guys who he can overpower. I see this as a TKO from GnP or a comfortable decision.

Matt himself said Renzo was a nice guy in a recent interview, but well this is a fight and fights usually aren't usually determine by being a nice guy. I'm all about fighters acting respectfully towards each other - unless it's Tito or Serra then all is fair - and it's nice to know renzo isn't being a big trash talker but I want Matt to kick his butt. Did anyone see the article from mmajunkie.com about Renzo being in investor involved in the UFC coming to abu daubi and him pretty much telling dana he wanted to fight Matt? Your family's honor doesn't need this fight - you do. And I keep hearing all these comments from him about the family name and Matt beating Royce, i think it's kind of stupid. No one needs to defend the Gracie name. It's a legacy that no one fight is going to change. And if he even had a chance to beat Matt - which i don't think he does - then what's he going to say? Matt's 50% winning percentage with our family brings us honor?

We actually talked about Matt alot... but mostly it was BJJ...

When we walked him and the UFC rep to their car.. I told him.. I have been a huge Hughes fans for years.. but seeing you interact with those fans.. you got another one...

He called me "brother.. thank you"..

While we were outside waiting for him (me and the TWC marketing director) a guy was leaving.. he was all tatted up.. didn't look happy.. I said you leaving?? He said that Renzo wasn't coming.... he had to go to teach his class.. I told him to hang for 10 more minutes... he is on the way...

Renzo and the UFC rep got their about 20 minutes later... I said Renzo.. nice to meet you.. this guy (he had went to call his dojo) said that he hasn't seen you in 10 years....

Renzo looked over saw the guy talking on the phone.. and you would have thought that he just saw his brother ...

after they said their "heys" he told me that... "Thanks for making him wait.. you are a cool guy:....

He would speak with everyone... was just a great guy... gonna suck to see Matt beat him down...

Matt's stand up is seriously underrated. The reasonwhy it didn't look overly impressive is because MAtt has been standing south paw.

If you watch Hughes GSP 2 and BJ vs Hughes 2 and atch matt's hand movement he is VERY crisp.

Matt can definately bang from the orthodox stance and I would personally like to see him go back to it. People know his shot is coming and it makes it less effective.

Hughes wins this fight wherever I;m just saying I'd really like to watch a return to orthodox.

yeah, i never understood the whole thing about matt's standup being weak ..yeah, he isn't like paul daley, but it is enough for people to worry about enough so that he gets the TD and pounds opponents into TKO or open em up for a sub .. but yeah, GSP has a glass jaw and BJ has no cardio ..

I agree that Matt's standup has been under-rated by some fans, but that is typical of many MMA fighters who's strengths are focused on wrestling and BJJ. On the other side, for a long time Wanderlei Silva's submission game has been under-rated by critics because of his dominance in the standup.

Matt set a standard with his dominance in the ground game, and with the evolution of the sport's younger stars and the growth in coverage by half-witted media outlets over the last 5-10 years, it's been easy to paint Matt as "weak" in the standup game.

This isn't Boxing or Kickboxing, this is MMA. Anybody who tries to de-value Matt or his record based on his prowess as a striker is simply a meathead fan who only half-way understands the sport.

Who gives a crap if Matt has bad standup? Its not like Renzo is gonna be able to stop Matt's takedowns o it does not really matter.
