Oh, no, Dave. Do you know the cause? I know you mentioned the vet gave you something to try or suggested something, but obviously it didn't help/work.

thank you everyone :ashamed:

Its really difficult for me because Jens the Budgie was my first, the original and best, my pride and joy...I bought Jens around the start of 2009.

We have a fairly good idea that it was Cancer that killed him. He kept getting sick recently, and I knew he had an underlying health issue. First his voice vanished, and we discovered he had got hypothyroidism, which meant he wasnt getting iodine, so we swapped to a fortfied seed which helpped him a bit, our theory is that the cancer upset his metabolism and messed with his hormones.

Then he underwent a lot of stress by moving from granville to markenfield, and then into the pulver house of birds aviary. We think that it was hard for him to acclimatize, the weather didnt help and the cancer probably upset his immune system leading to him getting sick with a chill that developed into a chest infection. So the vet gave him baytril, an antibiotic. I segregated him and he was better within a week...then a few weeks later he had breathing difficulties again. This was different though to the first, he wasnt coughing or sneezing or trying to cough stuff up...he couldnt breath.

We wondered if it was cancer but couldnt find out because that meant an xray, and that meant sedating him, and that meant gas, and the vets wouldnt gas him with a breathing difficulty. So the vets perscribed Baytril again...He didnt get worse, but he didnt get any better, and I soon realized whatever it was wasnt bacterial or viral.

This left fungal...but thats epidemic, and the vets said they had never diagnosed a fungal lung infection in any bird as small as a budgie, but they offered me the chance to have a post mortem incase he died...I turned it down because I dont need to see the lump which was probably in his lungs. Certainly the tumor wasnt anywhere near the surface because the vet did quite an intimate probe...Jens never forgave me for allowing that...but we had to know

He never got good enough for me to leave him out in the aviary, not even in the day time...then he began afew days ago to be continuously making a noise. Yesterday night I did put him in the cage in the aviary...and he started making a lot of noise...then it all went VERY quiet...and by the time I'd got there...he was lying on the cage floor on his side, with his head tucked under, and one wing outstretched over his face.

I spent the next three hours in tears, got less then four hours sleep, and then left for work at 5am this morning...oh...and I have my 15 mile charity walk in the rain tommorow with my corns.

been a bad week really :unsure-1:

Yes, Jens Pulver is aware, he's been following the progress on his namesake throughout The Budgies illness.
