View Full Version : Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia set to make 'big announcement' on April 14

From MMAMania.com (http://www.mmamania.com/2012/4/5/2928096/tim-sylvia-set-to-make-big-announcement-on-april-14):

Could it be?

With the possibility that Alistair Overeem is no longer eligible to compete for Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) heavyweight title on May 26 in Las Vegas, any "big announcement" coming from a 265-pound fighter is worth paying attention to.

Even if it's from Tim Sylvia.

"The Maine-iac," who in recent weeks has resorted to begging his old boss for another crack at fame and fortune under the ZUFFA banner, will be a special guest at the upcoming Fight Night 2 event on April 14 in Biddeford, Maine. That's where he's expected to drop some major news regarding his fighting future.

Could Sylvia find himself plugging one of the massive holes created by Overeem's (expected) absence?

Stranger things have happened, but it's unlikely the New England mauler will participate in the upcoming UFC 146 "Heavyweight" fight card. Instead, look for his possible inclusion on a regional show scheduled for later this year.

From Tim-eh:
"I'm excited to be coming home to Maine in the next week or so... and I have a big announcement my fans won't want to miss!"
After an embarrassing knockout loss to geriatric pugilist Ray Mercer in 2009, Sylvia rebounded to win six of his next seven fights with five finishes. He most recently outpointed Andreas Kraniotakes at ProElite 2 last November, prompting him to declare he could defeat 80-percent of the current crop of UFC heavyweights.

UFC President Dana White insists that Sylvia is not only past his prime, but wasn't very good to begin with, having been champion when the promotion's 265-pound division was at its weakest. Still, that hasn't stopped "The Maine-iac" from getting into fighting shape, even going into BEAST MODE.

And desperate times call for desperate measures.

Alright Maniacs, you've heard the news. What should we expect from Tim Sylvia come April 14?

I've only seen a few of his fights; only in one of them did he look the trimmest and fittest I've ever seen him. No offense to Tim, but I don't think the odds would be in his favor fighting the heavyweights they have now.

Do we remember what Sylvia's fighting shape looked like?

Last I can remember, he looked in shape when he fought Arlovski. Other than that I can't remember seeing him in some kind of shape. That was way back in 2006, He has looked REALLY bad physically since leaving the UFC that's for sure.
I can see him getting an instant title shot if he were to come back. Dana wants to prove a point to him and his fans. He has made remarks about Tim saying he can beat 80% of the weight division. Maybe Dana will bring him back for that title fight in hopes he gets KTFO really quick?

If he does get it for some reason, would love to see him get the KO, probably won't happen though.

IMO That's not 'big news'. He's a fighter, making an announcement that you have a fight is not news, UNLESS it's a huge fight with a known opponent. Tim's glory days are long behind him. If he feels good fighting cans then good for him. Sad to say he will never fight for a top organization ever again.

Spike TV will again air a replay of a UFC Fight Night event tonight -- as the channel has each Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET this month -- and tonight's episode features a legendary main event of Tim Sylvia vs. Assuerio Silva. Unfortunately, it's legendary for all the wrong reasons.

Originally, I thought this story was simply an urban legend. However, MMAjunkie.com recently learned that Sylvia himself confirmed the story.

So prepare for the gory details.

UFC Fight Night 3 took place in January 2006, and Sylvia had lost his belt to Andrei Arlovski 11 months prior. The former champ was set to face Silva, a UFC newcomer and former PRIDE fighter.

Apparently, though, Sylvia had been battling the flu prior to the fight. And because he was dehydrated and undernourished, Sylvia had a small accident in his pants -- during the fight. If you were watching the broadcast at home, you probably saw a small brown stain on the back of his pants.

As it turns out, Sylvia had -- in fact -- crapped his pants.

And Sylvia himself manned up and confirmed it.

From MMAWeekly.com:
A well-kept secret heading into the fight was Tim Sylvia was sick. Sylvia told MMAWeekly, "Not taking anything away from Assuerio, he's a tough dude, obviously. I hit him a couple of times and couldn't finish him. I was really sick for the fight. I got really sick Saturday and had problems holding my innards. When I was warming up, I had a few problems, and I actually had a few problems in the ring when I was fighting."

Elaborating, Tim said, "I don't know what it was. It got really cold when we were outside working out and stuff, going back and forth from the room. I caught something, and I just couldn't hold in my number twos... If you look at the fight you'll see that when my shorts came down, you'll see the wet mark in my underwear."

Sylvia went on to win the fight by unanimous decision, though Silva literally beat the crap out of him. (Yeah, I know, I know. Lame joke -- but that's what we do at MMAjunkie.com.)

Anyway, let's get past that topic -- quickly.

Also on the card that night was an uneventful Stephan Bonnar vs. James Irvin bout, Josh Burkman vs. Drew Fickett in a quick one, and one of Chris Leben's better performances (vs. Jorge Rivera). One fight from the undercard, Duane Ludwig vs. Jonathan Goulet, also was televised. (But don't blink; it's over in 11 seconds.)

Enjoy the fights. They begin at 9 p.m. ET on Spike TV. (And bathroom breaks are encouraged.)

Tim Sylvia reveals 'big announcement,' says he would 'absolutely' do The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) if he had to

From MMAMania.com:

http://cdn3.sbnation.com/entry_photo_images/3716503/mma_u_tsylvia1_576_large.jpg
Remember that "big announcement" former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia was teasing for April 14? Well he revealed all on his Twitter account and while some were surely hoping Dana White had changed his mind about bringing "The Maine-iac" back to the UFC, that's simply not the case.

Instead, it was just as my colleague Jesse Holland said it would be: a simple fight announcement on a regional show later this year.

Indeed, Sylvia announced at the Fight Night 2 event in Biddeford, Maine, that he will be returning to action on June 16 in Lewiston, Maine, against an opponent to be announced later.

That doesn't mean Timmah is giving up his dream of making a return trip to the Octagon one day. In fact, when he's not outright begging to be let back in or retweeting fans pleading to the powers that be, Sylvia was telling The Hammerfisting Podcast that he would go through The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) house to earn his spot.

Seriously. But don't take my word for it. Here's the quote from the man himself:
"Absolutely. I helped coach season two with Matt (Hughes) and Rich (Franklin) because it was half heavyweights and half 170 or 185-pounders. Matt being a 170-pounder and Rich being 185-pounds at that time and needing some help with the big boys, so, those are two of my best friends in the fighting industry. I went out there and stayed with those guys and helped them with their heavyweights and made some pretty good friends with that heavyweight division as well. But yeah, I watch The Ultimate Fighter and I would definitely do it if I needed to."
