Gay couple asked to reverse shirt at Dollywood

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ó A lesbian couple is asking for changes at Dollywood after an employee asked one of the women to turn her T-shirt reading "marriage is so gay" inside-out to avoid offending others on a recent visit to the Tennessee theme park complex.

Olivier Odom and Jennifer Tipton said Tuesday they want the park to be more inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families after Odom was asked to reverse her shirt when they visited Dollywood Splash Country next to the Pigeon Forge amusement park. The story was first reported by WBIR-TV in Knoxville.

Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens said on Tuesday that Dollywood is open to all families, but their dress code policy is to ask people with clothing or tattoos that could be considered offensive to change clothes or cover up.
Owens said the couple was not asked to leave and complied with the rules to reverse the shirt when asked.

"The park is open every day to everybody," Owens said. "We try to provide an environment for families of all shapes and sizes to enjoy themselves.

Owens said park officials were discussing the matter and would speak with the couple directly.

Odom said that they visited the water park July 9 with friends and their friends' two children when she was asked by a person at the front gate to turn her shirt inside out because it was a family park. Odom said she complied so as not to make a scene in front of the children, but felt offended.

"That's what we found so offensive ó that he said it was a family park," Tipton said. "Families come in a wide range of definitions these days and we were with our family."

The two said they felt they needed to file a complaint with Dollywood because they believed it was important to stand up for their beliefs in marriage equality.

"If marriage equality is going to happen, it's not going to happen if people sit at home quietly," Odom said.

Odom said they understand the park can have dress code policies, but she felt Dollywood needed to make their policies clear and provide better training for employees when determining what is considered offensive.
Odom and Tipton are not legally married, but held a ceremony last year in North Carolina. They wrote an email to the park asking the park "to implement policies that are inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people; conduct staff sensitivity training; and issue a public statement indicating that the park is inclusive of all families."

Owens said the couple's complaints have sparked discussion at the park about the dress code, a policy that park employees deal with frequently because of the thousands of visitors every year.

It amazes me how hypocritical this gay couple is being. They are upset about being offended when they were purposely wearing a shirt designed to offend others.

And why should they not be more inclusive of heterosexual couples who may be offended by the shirt? You can bet your ass they would have wanted them asking someone to remove or change a shirt offensive to gays.

"That's what we found so offensive ó that he said it was a family park," Tipton said. "Families come in a wide range of definitions these days and we were with our family."

That is correct. Families do come in a wide range these days and that still includes the traditional family so they deserve the same courtesy as gays.

People like this is what gives gays a bad name!

They don't want equal rights, they just want the right to violate others' rights.

Seriously, though, they knew what they were doing. Like a couple of grade-schoolers who are desperate for attention, this kind of publicity was exactly what they wanted. I'm pretty sure they would have been disappointed if no one had said anything about their shirts the entire time they were there.

When we went to Dollywood about 10 years ago, the guy in front of us in line was asked to turn his shirt inside out because it had a beer slogan on it. He did it--no problems-even apologized for not thinking about what he was wearing to a family park. Guess he didn't know he could raise a ruckus about Dollywood being offensive to beer-drinking families!

I'm offended by gays being gay in public. i know i'm not open minded in a few areas and that is one. i wouldn't even be comfortable around them holding hands much less them dissing marriage something that i believe in. I think the park was in the right to have them turn the shirt inside out. I also believe they would do it is there was a naked woman on a shirt. something that might offend a nudist. obviously i know that i will see things that i don't agree with and i will see these things also with my kids. it is my job to teach them what is right and wrong.

i probably would have pointed at them laughed and took a picture. i wouldn't care if i offended them since they didn't care who they were offending.

i also think it is ironic that the shirt one of them was wearing could be offensive to some people but they are worried that they were offended.

what is dollywood?

anyway .. twinsmama .. i don't think they were dissing marriage but it was more of support for gay marriage .. don't know .. could be wrong ... but i would think it would be a play on words meaning gays should be allowed to marry ... i just think censoring something like that is silly ... i could understand swear words or something .. i remember when i was younger there was a kid my age wearing a swastika on his shirt (i am sure that is considered offensive and not allowed here in canada).. i started mouthing off to the kid saying he didn't know what it stood for and crap as no one else would do it .. LOL .. the kids dad came by and wanted to tear me a new one (surprise, he was wearing the same shirt) .. anyways, stuff like that i can see being offensive, beer shirts and ghey stuff, i'd say pick your battles ..

Dollywood is a theme park started by country music singer Dolly Parton.

Anyways, I would full expect to be asked to turn my T-shirt inside out at Dollywood if I were wearing an "Abortion is murder!" shirt. So, the only reason for me to wear such a shirt would be to spark a reaction and then cry about how my freedom of speech is being violated. These women's motives are no different. Only the media actually pays attention to them because the media is working overtime to sell the gay agenda.

Absolutely. There's no reciprocal respect whatsoever. They don't need to advertise their sexual preferences on their t-shirts when they are out in public. Neither do straight people.

They ought to take some sensitivity training. Yeah, I know, when pigs fly.

Good point with the "Abortion is Murder" slogan.

Tyburn is still right. Dollywood should maintain, that it had them turn the shirt inside out because it appears as though they were using the word gay as a synonym for stupid, and that offends gays. They hate it that they are the new retarded. Speaking of which, what if the shirt said, marriage is retarded?

And why would the sodomites be upset that we defend marriage? Aren't they wanting to be married, shouldn't they be happy we are defending it and shouldn't they help us defend it? Dollywood didn't do anything against sodomy, only for marriage.

And yes I call it sodomy, not being gay, or being homo. I am not a homophobe, if anything i am a sodomophobe. But I ain't scared of sodomites, they seem pretty wimpy to me. I could even take em.

Also, why do we even acknowledge "gay marriage", that is an oxymoron, with the emphasis on moron. Marriage is a Divine institution, created and ordained by God, between one man and one woman. They can't change that with a law or popular opinion. The government didn't invent marriage, they don't get to dictate the parameters of it. Uncle Sam needs to brush up on his separation of church and state he likes to talk so much about. They don't want churchs talking about homosexuality, but the way I see it is that they are the ones who can't talk about it. Marriage is religious not legal rite.

If i decided matt hughes changed his name to buffy hughes the gracie slayer, does that mean he did? no, it doesn't. Likewise if all mankind decided that marriage was going to be redefined, is it? No. That is still up to God, the inventor and honorer of marriage.

Last time I checked I couldn't take a coffee maker cord and a toaster cord and tape the ends together and call them plugged in, and i know they definitely aren't going to work that way.

well anyways, that's my rant.

I agree, but if your shirt said "abortion is gay" it would be more ironic.

It makes me wonder what the next abomination that will be thrusted on us will be. Are we going to be forced to accept pedophiles next? beastiality? necrohilia? rape?

Can murderers finally gain acceptance because they can't help it because they were born that way. And it is their right to choose?

Not really, immorality is immorality it doesn't matter what form it takes. Plus, human morals degrade in a predictable pattern. It usually starts with the lifting of taboos on fornication (all forms of consenting sex outside of marriage) and voyeurism (lust, pornography), then the stigma of divorce is the next to go, followed by acceptance of homosexuality. Once homosexuality is accepted, the floodgates are opened and society begins to fall apart as all forms of sexual deviance become acceptable.

There are already groups out there using the exact same rhetoric as the Gay Rights movement to argue in favor of things like pedophilia, polygamy and bestiality. So, we might be having this exact same conversation in 20 years in regard to child molesters.

I cant see Necrophilia ever being accepted...but ironically NOT because of the implied sexual motive.

The Zeitgeist of the time changes, its true...and its changed for the last five hundred years towards the more liberal...that is not to say it wont revert...think about how society has changed...500 years ago there was no Church without Rome, Women did not have the Vote, Blacks were slaves, Devource was unthinkable, Homosexuality was illegal...and necrophilia, peadophilia and beastiality were...simply not heard of.

Living to the age of 50 was a winner.

Now A large proportion of Christendom says Rome is no Church at all, Women can vote and work, Devorce is more commonplace then Long Term Relationships when applied to Marriage, Blacks are no longer thought of as sub human or eternally in bondage, infact the Slave trade has vanished all togther in that aspect (though not it would seem in the selling of young Hatian Lads who are orphans from the disastor...and the tabloids tell me they are rather cheap considering the current financial crisis...) Homosexuals can do what they like...and people living to 100 has led to problems that noone could have forsaw when designing the financial world...pensions...diseases...etc

Usually when someone wears a shirt like that it is to get a reaction. I've done it. (I had FEAR THE * shirts made for my family over Cam Newton.) I wonder if she realize the park's policy and just did this to "gain awareness" or if she just thought it would grab attention of other park goers. I hate that private businesses have their arms twisted to lean towards being PC by people who want to make them seem like their business discriminated.

And i do agree that using the comparison of accepting rapist is wrong but I'll explain that later.

Wait a minute, are you now trying to compare what 2 gay adults do in private to cannibalism? C'mon man, get real.

I'll bite though on some of the other questions, though they have nothing in common with the topic at hand.

Euthanasia - If a person is terminally ill and suffering without relief, in full mental capacity, and wishes to end their life to end their and their family suffering, I don't have a problem with it if certain things are done prior. It's not my life.

Polygamy - No problem if it is consensual between all consenting adults. Certain things would need to be worked out first regarding estates, children etc. in case the marriage didn't work out. Legalities would need to be worked out first. Again, it's not my life. Me personally, I wouldn't want it.

Fighting to the death - We already have it, it's called war.

Feuding - It's not illegal in a sense of a quarrel. If it entails retaliatory violence and destruction of others' property without consent, no. If two people wish to destroy certain types of each others property and are both willing to accept the results without it costing the taxpayer, go for it. You break my I-pad, I break your I-phone, it's a win-win situation for Apple. Certain restrictions apply.

Fighting is already legal, so if members wish to feud and fight in a sanctioned event, go for it. Just be sure to film it so I can watch it on YouTube. Fighting to the death is murder. I don't wish murder to be legal. Ah, but you may say "how can I be against fighting to the death but be okay with euthanasia?" Two totally different concepts.

Everything is not okay as long as people consent. Common sense needs to prevail.

I won't touch cannibalism with a ten foot pole.

As does your opinion of mine. Wow, common ground again.

I have no problem with what 2 gay consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home. I just wish they would leave in the privacy of their own home and not rub their sex life in everyone's face. That's the problem that most people have with the Gay Rights movement.

I agree. I don't like seeing any extreme public displays of affection, heterosexual or homosexual. If you (not you personally) can't wait until you get home, get a room. I think in the years to come, if people come to accept that gay happens, the movement will dwindle and the gay community won't feel that they have to be "in your face." I think some of it is due to the community being vilified and spat upon by society so much that they use it like a big F you to get back at those who wished and wish to harm and vilify them. Just my opinion.

In another forum I visit, someone linked to a gay festival that occurred in San Francisco. What went on on the public streets was disgusting, and even my open mind was closed up. I can never un-see that.

*In this world which is filled with such hate and unrest, if 2 people find that they love each other enough to wish to commit the rest of their lives to that individual, I think it is a great thing.* I read a comment similar to * that and realized that I have felt that way but never put it into the proper wording.

Edit: You've never heard me speak, have you?

And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercurys and Subarus
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars
Then, when there's no more cars

Not sure anyone has ever consented to be eaten....but...well the consentual fights one is interesting :ashamed::laugh:

Apparently, you are not familiar with Armin Meiwes, Der Metzgermeister, "The Master Butcher". He advertised for a victim to be voluntarily cannibalized. He was able to find a consensual partner. They were both homosexuals. The victim had his penis cut off before he died. The butcher fried it up and seasoned it and the two ate it while the victim bled to death in the bathtub.

Agreed. Public displays of affection, even when it's between a husband and his wife are almost always in bad taste. Things like hugs, holding hands or small kisses are fine, but I've known guys who will grope, fondle or simply make lewd comments about their wives in public and I've always found that kind of behavior to be extremely disrespectful towards the woman that this man claims to love.

Common sense needs to prevail.I won't touch cannibalism with a ten foot pole.

okay, then what you have is relativism, and what you think is common sense is not what i think is common sense, cause i don't think there is anything remotely resembling common sense in sodomy.

thus you need a standard. I.E. the Bible

which begs another point, though i hate to add another dimension to this topic, that no country can tolerate every belief. We as a nation, are going to have to be something, not a melting pot of everything. We are going to have to decide if we are christian, atheist, muslim, or something else, cause in the end it just won't work trying to be nothing

so buzzard.... and i am and have been completely civil in this entire conversation.... since the above story about cannibalism was consentual, does that make it okay? and also, what if someone wants to be eaten after they die of natural causes?

Your hypothetical scenario used to be standard practice amongst the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea. Family members would eat the flesh of dead tribe members. Cannibalism transmitted a prion which caused a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy referred to as Kuru.

Yes you have been completely civil in this discussion, and I thank you for that. I hope that I haven't offended you in my reply; if I have please accept my apologies.

For me personally, cannibalism is not okay. Luckily for me, I've never been put in the position where I would have to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. While I can say what I would do in that situation sitting here in front of the computer with a refrigerator full of food, I'm not sure what measures I would take to survive if I were a lone survivor and cannibalism was my only chance for survival. Recreational cannibalism for the fun of it, I'm against.

Is it okay in my mind? No. In a pygmy tribe in the deep jungles, they may have a differing view than mine.

I don't think that we need to be a nation of (insert religious beliefs here.) I don't want to be lumped in with Islam, Christianity, or Atheism, even though I have atheistic/agnostic views. I would believe that you would fight to not be lumped in with Islam or Atheism. I believe in individual choice.

Are you only against the practice of sodomy between homosexual couples, or between heterosexual couples as well as defined by Merriam Webster? Link (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sodomy) I am only referring to the practice between consenting adults.

I believe that even you and I share some common ground in the regard to common sense. Maybe not in all aspects, but in many.

Edit: In regard to your question about the cannibalism as discussed by Play the Man. Eeeew no! Mind bleach, mind bleach, where is the mind bleach!

I grope my wife in public pretty frequently. Granted, "public" in this case indicates an adult party or event. I wouldn't be grabbing her butt at Disney World but if we're out dancing in Atlantic City, heck yeah. Of course, you and I might run with different style crowds but in my case, it's pretty much acceptable behavior. I don't find it to be disrespectful to my wife at all. It's the opposite. It's one of my ways of showing affection to her and she likes it.

Thatís very thoughtful, I think that gets to the heart of the issue. Secular government was originally a Christian idea (render unto Cesar what is Cesarís) to allow people to find the right path on their own. It was never intended to encourage complete abandonment of all standards of decency and moral health.
