I don't think I've heard of any of these.

What genre are they?

Mostly alternative rock, but there is one classical score, one ambient techno and on 80s pop song in that list as well.

And Dead Can Dance is in a category by themselves (you'd probably recognize the lead singer, Lisa Gerrard, since she was heavily featured on the Gladiator and Black Hawk Down soundtracks):

Yep, I first heard of Dead Can Dance from my brother. He was the art director for our high school drama club and they were doing a play about Dracula, they used Host of the Seraphim as the theme song for their play. That was around 1989-90 and it was the first time I ever heard of them.

Of course, I discovered Sisters of Mercy off of the radio. As I'm sure everyone else here did.

2. Love will tear us apart-Joy Division

Wow, it's been a looooong time since I listened to Joy Division. IIRC, didn't their lead singer commit suicide and they reformed into New Order? I kind of discovered Joy Division retroactively from listening to New Order back in the early 90s.

That brings back memories of Echo and the Bunnymen and Souixsie and the Banshees as well.

Lynard Skynard rules :)

I think musicians as well as listeners who really relate to music can't ever really limit themselves to one genre. There is just something encapsulating about listening to it, lyrics (if there are any), and then the benefits of singing along, or playing along if you play an instrument.

It also helps if you have an iPod or a Bose 7 speaker sound system with a 200 watt subwolfer in the hatch of your car!!!

Dark Side of The Moon is a great album! I would have to say my favorite album from them is "The Final Cut". I also was/am a fan of Syd Barrett. I have his greatest hits as well as Madcap laughs on disc.
