Anyone else seen this?

I just saw it today and it wasn't bad. I'd give it a 7.5 or so....BUT.......

Christian Bale's performance of Dicky Eklund was AMAZING. If Bale isn't nominated for an Oscar I'll be stunned. Not sure it's an Oscar winning performance but he definitely deserves a nomination. It was just amazing.

The story itself is a little hard for me to watch. The family life and "support" system those two brothers grew up in was really unfortunate.

It's worth seeing if you're a boxing, Bale or Wahlberg fan... otherwise... wait for DVD.

Nope. As a fight fan I was disappointed but it was the right call for the film. The Gatti fights wouldn't have worked into the film very well IMO.

Obviously I need to see it, but I guess I just feel like you can't mention Ward without mentioning Gatti. Especially considering how tragic it all ended for Arturo.

Mickey does have a great story though, and I'm sure this movie is awesome. Can't wait to see it.

Got to agree with you bro. I am dying to see this movie! I am a big Mark fan and have always been a Ward fan. When I was young and first got into boxing, he was the only non-HW other than RJJ that I cared about. Cause he was IRISH!!! That used to be important to me for some reason.

After he beats Neary, they mention the three wars he & Gatti went through, but they don't show any of it.

I loved the movie. I don't think it's winning any awards, but it was definitely a great movie & I was once again impressed by Bale.

Boxing really tends to lend itself to stars who's nationality link is important. For example my bloodline is Sicilian so I tend to lean towards the Italian boxers and always have. Sure my favortie Boxer is Ray Mancini but I also like Tommy Morrison a lot because my other bloodline is Ozark redneck  and I like Joe Hipp because he was Native American. Never been to gung ho on the Mexican, Cuban, or PR boxers and I really dislike the English boxers except for Hatton. Nowadays the HW division is very void and very few Americans are even in the top 10 ( except Eddie and Arreola)

It's hard to take a fighter serious when he's named after part of a woman's anatomy....

Sorry, couldn't help it

I've never heard of it referred to as an "Ekland" before, but I guess you've got a different set of slang in your parts . . .

See, I knew Virginia was really too far North to be considered Southern! Your lack of correct vernacular understanding puts it all in perspective....

I'm still not sure he'll win it but I'm glad to see he was given a nomination.

Saw this movie at the theater when I was on vacation in the Philippines. Since then, I've downloaded the screener. Love the movie as I'm a Wahlberg fan all the way. Christian Bale's performance was incredible! Good to see that he's nominated. He was so good, it stole the limelight from Wahlberg.

Agreed. Wahlberg did a great job but Christian's role was much better written IMO. He nailed it.
