I agree that they take PC too far.

After Al Sharpton got Imus fired, he felt the power--went after Clinton, etc...

This taking offense at every word is BS. As a friend of mine would say, "he makes my butt tired"!

I don't hear any Priest or Rabbi's complaining. IF people want to be politically correct thats fine, but then people should remember that its a two way street. You can't bitch about it then turn around and do the same thing.

Thats my biggest beef.

Amen, brother! That's my biggest beef too!

Apparently, according to Whoopi G, when they say "nigger" (and please don't take offense, I'm only repeating what she said), it's meant as a term of "affection", and it's perfectly okay for them to say it. Sherrie, the other black lady on The View, told Barbara Wa Wa that it was okay if she (Sherrie) said it, but (and I quote), "I don't want to hear that word come out of your mouth!).

I personally don't think we should say it because it is a term that was used in a very derogatory hurtful hateful way meant to demean. But, if they're going to preach it and talk the talk, they need to walk the walk along with everyone else.

its like a bunch of kids in grade school,,there saying ha ha we have something you dont have,,
what these people need to do is try and move up another rung on the ladder of self esteem and stop using that word altogether.
and before someone go's ballistic i know the majority of black people dont think this way,

To bad the the "n" word doesn't even mean that, its something they made up to make it understandable to call each other it. In fact nigger came from the latin word niger which meant black. It was more aimed towards the spanish and portuguise and the racial mixings with each others and slaves.

We came into the meaning during the early slave trades when the slaves where referred to as "n" cause of there dark skin. No clue where the second "g" came from though most likely lost in translation or something.

Another thing I hate is when they blame us for the years of slavery, yet slavery originated from Africa and the slaves were nothing more then criminals and people who committed war crimes against other tribes and lost.

I understand people getting offeneded with owrds.. but if you are hearing offensive words.. maybe you should consider why you are around the people that use them.

What I consider a kick in the groin is the people that want to find offense in what other people say...

I have a well rounded vocabulary.. and I used the word niggle one time.. and someone said I was a racists.. "YOu don't even know what the word mean apparently" I said...

He told me that is doesn't matter what it means, it's the way it made him feel...

So I should be more dumb cause I prefer to be educated?

What they don't tell you is exactly that. Black people in Africa would go out and capture their own black people to sell in the slave trade.

Its abhorrent that anyone is involved in this but the fact they enslaved eachother is never mentioned.

Wooo...this thread got sort of serious....

I get what he's saying...stereotyping jokes. I don't think they're that offensive...

For instance, I am of Native American descent on my mother's side and Irish on my father's....

I would not be offended if someone were to say that I probably have a bad temper and drink a lot...

Slavery is still a lucrative business today. So many people sold into the sex slave trade and other forms of slavery. Humans as a species never seem to cease to amaze me.

Well.. everyone hides their ugly past....

Look at the Japanese-Americans during WWII, and what we did to them.

That's not really the point of being able to laugh at silly racism. I prefer to think of myself as a culturalist.

Certain cultures.. I can not stand. There are white/black/middles eastern and so forth..

My little brother's wife is from India. She looks more Hispanic than Indian and they live in Texas so her origins are sometimes questioned. So when people ask her about her ethnicity she says, "I am Indian. The dot not the feather." My little brother has been known to answer back, "She's Indian. The 7-Eleven, not the casino." My little brother is 6 ft 5, has blonde hair and blue eyes. They are quite the pair.

no man .. there is a huge difference .. most of the time when they say it, it is like, what up nigga, my nigga, or nigga please .. when someone of other races is saying it, they are not saying it that way, but eff you nigger, dumb nigger or nigger go home ... so there is a huge difference ..

EDIT: But i do think there is too much PC with jokes .. some go overboard, but most of them are pretty harmless ...

OK quick story....

Most of my childhood was spent in a pretty small town of about 3000 people. My high school had less then 600 kids and my Senior class had under 100. It was a mostly caucasian town with some Native Americans and Koreans.

There was African American in my 8th grade class.... and 2 that I spent my HS years with... beyond that is was mostly us crackers...

So... I move into the big "city" of Tacoma my senior year and after graduation took a job at a local hotel. My department had about 30 employees. Including me we had 4 white people... the rest were African American... it was a bit of a culture shock to say the least. Well time moved on and I started developing some great friendships with my co-workers. They were pretty cool with my ignorance being a "white guy from farm country" and helped me understand the black culture. I learned to play Tonk and Bones... went to BBQ's in the summer, played basketball at the park and threw down some serious butt whoopins on Tecmo Bowl with Da Raiderz!!!

One day I walked into the lunch room at work to begin my shift and noticed all my guys ( I was their supervisor by then) waiting for our shift to start. I walked up to my closest friend Anthony and said "What's up nigga"... :scared0011: and the room went silent...... very... very silent..... to be honest I was confused a little. :unsure-1: I didn't "get" that I wasn't supposed to say that word...

So Anthony... playing it cool stood up, gave me a little dap and said "Chuck you're cool for a white boy... but you ain't THAT cool"

And the whole room kinda breathed this sigh of relief...... I never said it with malice... I just thought it was ok since we were all friends. That's when I was explained the difference between "nigga" and "nigger" and the simple fact that white folks aren't supposed to say either...

Which I personally think is crap.... but that's another story!!! :)

*sigh*

It really isn't about whether a white person can say the word or not. It is all about context. If you have a fat friend with you then you don't go around calling them a fat ass just because you can say those words. It is about respect. There are lots of times when certain words or phrases are inappropriate. If you know that it will offend someone then don't say it unless you are prepared to deal with the consequences. I call my sister a Bitch all the time but if someone else did then it would be game on.

p.s. For all you white people chomping at the bit to say the 'n' word then go right ahead. You should say it as often as possible and as much as you like. You should sit in front of the mirror and practice it until you get the dialect just right. So, now you can say it. Now what?

I can't seem to bring myself to feel discriminated against because I can't use the 'n' word. I don't want to use it.

Context.... that is exactly the point. I don't go out of my way to throw around any words but there certainly isn't any word in the English language that is so horrible that we shouldn't be able to say/type it within the proper context. And if there were such a word... why on earth would it be nigger instead of chink or kike or honkey or any other slur? You don't hear Asians talking about the 'c' word do you? Words only have power when we give it to them.

Afterall people.... it really IS just a word....

Because the majority of us are Black and White. lol, Dufus. And when was the last time you were called a honkey?

And I think the point I made is that you are able to say it, say it whenever you like. But IMO opinion there is no proper context for me to use that word. You can say it all you want. :)

Why aren't you in a thread asking for society to tell you it is okay to use those other words? Because they aren't the issue here. They don't have as much power here, as applies to us, as the others. I don't even know very many other racial slurs (however, I recently learned one from a friend and I can't wait to use it. :ninja:  ). Whether you like it, agree with it, or accept it.....the 'n' word does have that kind of power in our society. Now it is up to us to accept that and deal with it or keep denying that it is real.

You can't take the stigma off of that word just because you think it shouldn't have it.

And the more the PC folks make a big deal about it... the longer it will be perceived to have some sort of "power"...

At some point in your life you were taught or just accepted as fact that some word... THAT word is so horrible we can't even speak it or write... we must abbreviate it because it's just that offensive.

Me personally.... I think that is ridiculous..... I have a friend John... he lives in Arizona... he won't type the word God.. he types G-d. He does that out of reverence.. (it might be a Jewish thing.. not sure). Something like that I could understand.

I asked before... and I'll ask again..... Why that word?? Why not some other swear word or racial slur?? It's THAT word because a small but very vocal segement of society decided that it's such a horrible word that nobody of another race can say it. Or type it. But they can.... somehow it became their word... they own it. They can say it, write it or rap it if they want to.

But because I'm white I can't??? Isn't that discrimination?? Nahhh.... not when it applies to Whitey!!! :tongue0011:

Why is it that word that you are so worried about? Why aren't you in here demanding to get to call the mentally challenged 'retards'? Why aren't you demanding to be allowed tocall gays a fag without them getting offended?

So, now that the word offends some people then you are saying that they give it the power? Maybe it is Whitey wanting to say it so bad that is giving it it's power.

You are trying to use intellect and logic in this argument. But you just can't ignore the emotional aspect in this case.

I'm not the least bit worried about the word... that's the point. Its just another inappropriate slur to me... like all the others

Why aren't you in here demanding to get to call the mentally challenged 'retards'? Why aren't you demanding to be allowed tocall gays a fag without them getting offended?
Awesome try baiting me with the "gay" comment!! Bravo. But no takers this time  I haven't demanded anything... I wouldn't direct that word at anyone anymore then I would any other slur... I just don't think it's so "special" we have to abbreviate it. You're actually the one who made this thread about a word :D

So, now that the word offends some people then you are saying that they give it the power? Maybe it is Whitey wanting to say it so bad that is giving it it's power.
We give words the power to offend you know that. That's why when you and I used to argue you would accuse me of taking things too personal. I would choose to be offended... It's a choice. You helped teach me that!!!

You are trying to use intellect and logic in this argument. But you just can't ignore the emotional aspect in this case.
I'm not ignoring it at all.... I'm just choosing not to yeild to it.
