Death ray (http://www.engadget.com/tag/Deathray/)" is probably one of the most tantalizing phrases in the blogger's vocabulary, so our ears perked up when we heard talk of one out there in the Las Vegas Strip. A totally unforeseen and unpredictable consequence of building a 57-foot curved mirror in the desert, the Vdara Death Ray is the affectionate nickname given to a phenomenon that's been plaguing poolside loungers staying at the hotel / spa. Among the victims is one Bill Pintas, whose tale of woe was recently printed in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
[A]fter a brief dip in the hotel pool, he was sunning on a recliner. He was on his stomach, relaxed, eyes closed. But suddenly, the lawyer became so uncomfortably hot that he leaped up to move. He tried to put on his flip-flop sandals but, inexplicably, they were too hot to touch. So he ran barefoot to the shade. "I was effectively being cooked," Pintas said. "I started running as fast as I could without looking like a lunatic." Then he smelled an odor, and realized it was coming from his head, where a bit of hair had been scorched.
A spokesman for MGM Resorts International (which owns Vdara) claims that it is working to fix the problem. In the meantime, if you're going to be in town for any random tech shows (http://www.engadget.com/ces) that might pop up, we suggest that you either get a trailer (http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/11/video-engadget-ces-trailer-tour/) or barricade yourself into your suite at Circus Circus. Both have worked for us in the past.

That whole City Center is gorgeous. I think I'm staying there on my next Vegas trip :)

The real death ray.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0I8oDU7NbE

Although, I gotta say I can't stand the woman doing the commentary on that video. She needs to get a heavy dose of the "pain ray".

Didn't Mythbusters do a segment on a death ray?

Yeah. They built one and managed to catch a wooden boat on fire with it. It was a bunch of curved mirrors that all focused the sun's light to one spot.

I just saw that episode and they weren't able to catch it on fire, just made it smoke.

Didnt they revisit the myth with a couple peoples devices and got it to work?

Thinking back, you're probably right. I think they determined that it COULD be done even though they weren't completely able, but it was unlikely. Something like that. My brain's been scattered too many times. If they didn't show boobs, I don't remember it clearly.

It could be done, just not with period technology.

The one I saw was with the contestants in their contest, and they were only able to get the boat to smoke. They were able to catch things on fire at a small distance when the object wasn't moving, but they never caught the ship on fire with the Archimedes Death Ray.

Upon researching the Myth Busters show, I stand corrected as the link below says that they did, though For the life of me I don't recall any flame happening on the show.

There were boobs shown on the show, but I guess the 2 hosts weren't the kind of boobs you were hoping for. I have trouble watching that show because of the boob known as Adam Savage. Now Kari Byron I can definitely handle.
