View Full Version : Kimbo Slice to make pro boxing debut

I wish Kimbo all the best, but I think Gary Shaw is a little overly optimistic about Slice's skill set.

http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content8298.html

I'm gonna be a problem in the heavyweight division. I'm going to be coming in with a bad demeanor. I want to see what it's like to break some ribs, break a jaw with one punch,' stated former UFC heavyweight Kimbo Slice, who officially announced his intention to make his professional debut as a boxer. After weeks of negotiations, promoter Gary Shaw, who previously worked with Slice when he made his mixed martial arts debut with the now-defunct EliteXC organization, finally convinced the former YouTube sensation to test his striking skills in the sweet science.

"He could easily be at the same level as guys the Klitschkos have been fighting," Shaw would tell Michaael Woods of ESPN New York. "Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he's coming to boxing too late, but I don't think so. He's not a beaten-up athlete. He's a natural, with that bob and weave like Mike Tyson," he added, drawing comparisons to the style, raw aggression and aura of Mike Tyson, who was once considered to be one of the most feared fighters in the heavyweight division. It's doubtful that Slice will carry that same mystique that Tyson once had, especially considering that he was already stopped twice in his 6-fight MMA career, however, if matched correctly, he can certainly provide some fireworks to a division that is sorely lacking in excitement.

"This is a career move," Slice would explain. "I love fighting. I like to knock people the **** out. I love engaging. Maybe some people think I'm crazy." Although no official date has been set for Slice's professional boxing debut, Shaw suggested that his first bout would likely come some time towards the end of this year. "These fighters these days, they're complacent, lazy. I'm hungry," Slice added.

Guys like Samuel Peter, Shannon Briggs, Eddie Chambers. or Chris Arreola would destroy and embarrass Kimbo and Shaw knows it. Gary is just tossing Kimbo to the wolves to make another quick buck off the guy.

Yeah, it's like all the YouTube idiots who were calling for Brock to get killed by Kimbo, then he got KOed by Petruzelli and it was like, "what now idiots." I knew Seth would win that fight, but not THAT easily. A trained U.S. karate champion against a backyard brawler is easy to pick who's going to win. The same will happen when Kimbo faces a trained boxer.

If Kimbo has such promise as a Boxer then why did he have to immediately shoot in on a 50 year old Ray Mercer?

Oh, thats right, because he would have gotten that beard knocked clean off his face if he tries to stand a bang with the big boys.

LOL, not to mention, completely NOT engage in a slug fest with the guy? He went straight for the guillotine choke. Slick move as Mercer wasn't expecting it, but still, proved he didn't want anything to do with fighting Mercer.

To be fair, Kimbo was just doing what Bas told him to do to win the fight.

My point really was just that this guy has no place in a Boxing ring with any of the guys on the highest level. Shaw should be ashamed for even putting Kimbo in the same sentence with the name "Klitschko".

No real disrespect to Kimbo, at least he has some talent and actually DOING SOMETHING unlike the idiots from shows like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" or "Jersey Shore" who are getting paid big bucks.

I don't hate Kimbo for trying to make some money, but it's absurd for Shaw to toss around comparisons to Mike Tyson or say that Kimbo could easily be on the level of some of the best HW's in the world.

There are a few ham and eggers in the HW divison he might have a slight chance with. BUt I seriously doubt anyone in the top 25 would loose to him on their worst day. Boxing is not street brawling. It is the sweet science for a reason. You go in there brawling you will hit the canvas for a nice nap. His MMA strinking did not seem very crisp to me so not sure why he thinks he can make that jump. It will sell PPVs at least the first time

I hope he makes a ton of money and can take care of his family, but the only place he could take Vitali or Wladamir is to the store, if they let him borrow the keys. if he goes in and lets his hands go, he could KO some low level guys and possibly some names but only if he does it in the 1st rd.

I don't doubt that the possibility for him to win against a VERY LOW ranked fighter exists....but I am really struggling to see who that fighter is at this point....

I mean, seriously, anybody worth being considered a professional by almost any standard in the world would likely trounce Kimbo. They would either be too smart, too fast, too strong, or a combination of the three. Even if Kimbo is faster and stronger than his potential tomato can; said tomato can will MOST LIKELY have vastly superior experience as a boxer and would easily out-point him. Unless we are supposed to believe that Kimbo has one punch KO power or the friggin "Dim Mak Death Touch" (that he didn't even have against "Birdman" in some random Miami backyard) I don't know how anybody could come to the conclusion that Kimbo will be anywhere near anybody in the highest levels of boxing. Leave it to Gary Shaw to think he can sell ice to Eskimos.

James Toney's Final Mission: Rid Boxing of Kimbo Slice

By Michael Marley

James “Lights Out” Toney has a course of action left to accomplish.

He participated in a charade, a total mismatch Saturday night in Boston when Randy “The Natural” Couture dropped him like a sack of potatoes for a first round knockout under MMA rules and regulations.

Now I've got the bright (?) idea for another laugher of a fight except that this time it will be five weight division world champion Toney doing the laughing and not being laughed at.

At the same time, Toney could do boxing a favor and rid us of the ridiculous pretension of street brawler Kimbo Slice.

We can label it "Bully Beatdown" like that TV program where would be toughs get their ashes hauled by real MMA athletes.

Slice and handler Big Gary Shaw would have us believe that, having been an MMA flop, now the nearly age 40 Miami destroyer of winos and crackheads, is going to become a legitimate heavyweight contender in boxing.

I mean, come on Big Gar, don't we have enough garbage to deal with already? How many sports is Slice going to be detected as a fraud in anyway?

I wouldn't pay to watch it but it would be great to see a real fighter like Toney mop the floor with this complete phony, Slice.

In an alleyway, Slice might clean Toney's clock, I don't know.

But, inside the boxing ring, Slice would think he forgot to pay his power bill because I've no doubt how quickly and completely Toney would live up to his nickname and slightly rehabilitate himself.

“Lights Out” would dim all the lamps for Kimbo, for sure.

For boxing, it would be a simple case of addition by subtraction.

JAMES TONEY: "TELL GARY SHAW I'M DOWN TO WELCOME KIMBO TO BOXING!"
By Percy Crawford | August 30, 2010

Mondays are by far the hardest days to get going on, but when you receive an early morning wake-up call from future Hall of Famer James "Lights Out" Toney, it's pretty easy to snap to attention. "Wake yo ass up. I heard Gary Shaw was talking **** about me," Toney called me up to inform me earlier today. I scoured the internet to try and find the article he was referring to and ran across a few comments that Shaw had made to>Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports, saying Toney looked "like a very old man, slurred his words, and was non-competitive." Shaw also stated, "James Toney had less than a zero percent chance unless Randy had a heart attack from hearing the bell ring," before referring to the UFC 118 pay-per-view as a "sham." Of course, Toney wanted to set the record straight and let Shaw know that although his mixed martial arts skills still need some improvement, his boxing skills are just fine and he'd love the opportunity to showcase them against any one of his fighters. "Tell Gary Shaw I'm down to fight Danny Green or welcome Kimbo to boxing," Toney remarked.

Toney is just two days removed from his disappointing MMA debut this past Saturday night at UFC 118. UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, best known for his skills as a Greco Roman wrestler, wasted little time in taking Toney to the ground and choking him out in a little over 3 minutes. Although UFC President Dana White made it clear that he's no longer interested in matching professional boxers with UFC fighters, Toney insists that he'll continue his mixed martial arts, as well as his boxing career. Regarding Gary Shaw's recent comments, Toney does bring up a valid point. Although people are quick to judge him on his performance inside of the Octagon, no one is too eager to step inside of a ring with him. It's a fact that Toney hopes will change in the near future assuming anyone is brave enough to test their boxing skills against him. Now that he's experienced what it's like to fight inside of a cage, Toney encourages anyone to do the same and step into his world inside of a ring.

Enter former UFC heavyweight Kimbo Slice! After his own disappointing loss to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113, Slice was also released from the organization and now, he and his new promoter, Gary Shaw, have announced his intention to cross over into boxing. Ironically, not too long ago, it was Shaw who first suggested the idea of a bout between James Toney and Kimbo Slice. "I think the UFC made a huge mistake. Once again, Dana's ego has probably gotten in the way. I think Kimbo Slice could be a draw wherever he goes around the world. I think they matched him up wrong. I would have put him against just stand-up fighters. I would have built to a pay-per-view with James Toney, so my way of doing business is obviously different than Dana's and the UFC," Shaw would tell Marcos Villegas of FightHub TV back in June, shortly after Slice was released from the UFC. In fact, according to Shaw, a bout between Toney and Slice would have been much more competitive based on the stand-up skills that both men prefer to exhibit. "If James wants to...and I like James a lot...if he wants to try MMA, then God bless him, but he needs to be in against the Kimbo Slices, the guys where he can stand and use his skills as a boxer. He's way too old to develop all the skills of these real good MMA guys. Impossible," he continued.

While Shaw is correct that he would have stood a far better chance of being competitve against the likes of Kimbo Slice, Toney was actually against taking the easier challenge, preferring instead to test his skills against the best that the UFC had to offer. Given Shaw's comments, however, Toney is now wondering if the promoter feels the same about his own fighters' chances against him inside the boxing ring. "It would have been like taking candy from a baby for me to fight him [Kimbo Slice] with 4 ounce gloves on. But now, since his promoter wants to talk **** about me, I will gladly welcome him into boxing. I fought a MMA legend in my first MMA bout, so now he can fight a legend in his first pro boxing bout," stated Toney. "Furthermore, he is advising Danny Green and I've always wanted to see what he can do without the headgear on because I damn near killed him with it on," he continued.

Never one to shy away from a fight, Toney is already eyeballing a return to the squared circle some time in October, which is also the same month that former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver is making his heavyweight debut. Toney is also hoping to get back inside of a cage some time in the beginning of next year. Whether or not Shaw would entertain putting any of his fighters inside the ring with James Toney remains to be seen, but it's clear that the future Hall of Famer won't stop looking to pick a fight anytime soon. So the question is will Gary Shaw put his money where his mouth is and put Kimbo Slice or Danny Green in the ring with James Toney?

http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content8315.html

The only thing that was proven is that James Toney has no business in MMA.

I don't get why people are so quick to hate on Boxers and say "they are one dimensional and they won't last in MMA" but at the same time they will give mad props to guys with ONLY Wrestling or Jiu Jitsu backgrounds. People should WANT to see a real high level boxer make the transition and actually take MMA seriously. Instead, we get a fat, washed up, shell of a Boxer who hasn't been relevant in over a decade and who is notorious for NOT training in his OWN SPORT, and that is supposed to be that be all end all to this "MMA vs Boxing" debate...it's ridiculous. "Pure" Boxer or not, most fighters actually take training and preparation seriously and wouldn't come in and try to jump into another sport at it's highest level if they were not ready.

Gary Shaw is just another promoter, like Dana White. Gary Shaw said a few weeks ago that James was too old to get into MMA, but now he is trying to sell people Kimbo Slice getting into pro-boxing.

Now Shaw and Goosen will be putting this stupid fight together....unbelievable...Thanks Dana.

LOL, all good points. Start with the basics, go bottom up and earn your way into the top guys. Toney brought that on himself, but like he said in his interview that I posted on the UFC section, he wanted to test himself against the best the UFC had to offer. I think he's nuts, but I respect that he wanted to fight the best.

He only wanted to fight "the best" to get that paycheck.

What James Toney made in his first fight compared to other UFC/MMA fighters is basically criminal.

Sure, I give him props for getting in there and taking his lumps, but the man has had over 80 professional fights, that is what he does. He did nothing to prepare and came in grossly out of shape, as usual, except this time he was supposed to have "gotten into shape", instead he was 20 pounds heavier than he has ever fought at....
