“I’m excited to bring Akiyama into the UFC and I can see him making an immediate impact in the middleweight division,” said UFC President Dana White. “Besides his great judo and submission game, he’s a finisher, and UFC fans are going to love watching him because he always shows up to fight.”

Born of Korean descent in Osaka, Japan, Akiyama first made his name in the international sports world as a decorated black belt in judo who collected numerous titles, including a Gold medal in the 2002 Asian Games.

By 2004, Akiyama sought a new challenge in the world of mixed martial arts, and he made an immediate impact on Dec. 31, 2004, when he debuted with a first-round submission win in his bout against former world heavyweight boxing champion Francois Botha.

Over the next three years, the 5-foot, 10-inch tall Akiyama built a stellar reputation as one of the best fighters in the world, submitting highly-touted knockout artist Melvin Manhoef, knocking out UFC middleweight Denis Kang, and engaging in battles with the likes of Kazushi Sakuraba and Kazuo Misaki. In 2008, the 33-year-old continued his run of excellence, submitting Katsuyori Shibata and Masanori Tonooka to up his stellar MMA record to 12-1 and two no-contests, with none of his bouts going the distance.

I am soo pumped about this, this guy is SICK

Akiyama is much more decorated.

Karo has 6 Junior National Wins, Akiyama has pro wins in big tourney's.
and in Asia, where Judo is much more popular and the competition is a LOT more stiff

in Japan (DREAM) they let you wear them in MMA is my point, not the UFC though. it will be interesting to see what he has without the Gi and the Vaseline that went with it.

He got accused on having a slick Gi in a Judo tourney, never in MMA (and only once, it would also be very easy to see vasoline on fabric)
also, he didn't always wear his Gi in mma, see the video link i posted.

You seem to just not like the guy for no real reason.

I almost fell asleep waiting for the "hurting" he put on Kang....he landed 2 punches...1 bloodies his nose and the other knocks him out.

I'm looking forward to seeing his throws and ground game though.

It was ruled a NC, he wasn't dis qualified.

"
In regards to whether Akiyama had used any lubricants or oils on his body before entering the ring,
the inquiry revealed that while Akiyama had not intentionally applied any substances such as Vaseline or Thai oil,
he had applied a skin moisturizer beforehand, for cosmetic purposes. "

How many MMA fighters do you think put lotion on before fights?
and let it dry.... A lot more than Akiyama

Hopefully you really hate GSP then, or you're a hypocrite.

He was definitely "greased". Then when his opponent goes to put his leg up to get his head/arm that referee sure jumps in there pretty quick to stop the fight. Looks like something else was greased...

Has he done anything like this recently? I think it's pretty **** convenient that these guys (Y.A. and GSP) don't realize putting on "any" type of product that's gonna make you slippery is against the rules or that you don't realize your cornerman has vaseline on his hands (still) after putting it on your face and is now putting his hands on your body. But, maybe that's just me...

I thought the article said he was "suspended" indefinitely at the time (?). :unsure-1:

the record on Sherdog says NC but the video and articles say "disqualified"

either way, he cheated and had the win taken away.

i doubt any others do that, but Akiyama got caught.

i don't hate GSP but i gave him **** about his greasing for sure.

No, the Sakuraba thing was 3 years ago, and a joke.
You can use steroids in Japan but they take away his win for lotion? Come on.
The Japanese are crooked as heck with MMA sometimes, he is Korean, and gets a lot of hate in Japan.

He was accused of greasing his Gi in 2003.
I don't even know how you would grease fabric lol

Bonnie
02-25-2009, 08:00 AM
That's what I don't get about these guys doing stuff like this. They are super-skilled and talented and obviously work so hard to get their bodies in top form to fight.

For me, as a fan, of course, I'm gonna have my favorites that I like and want to see win. I just don't like to see someone win and then find out that they did something to give themselves an unfair advantage. To me that is cheating and even if you do win, in my eyes, you're a loser. I just don't expect to see this kinda crap going on especially at top level fighting. I guess some would call me naive.
