This is the link. You decide. Not only do I believe this is racist, I think this is very sexist as well. More light colored people go to tanning beds than people of color. The majority are women. This has no right to be in this bill. Please tell me what you guys think.

I hadn't even thought about it targeting certain people. But, oh well. I just see it as a luxury tax. I think they should have left in the extra tax for cosmetic surgeries, too.

Shyte, if i have to suffer more taxes then everyone should have to. It's all about spreading the love, or the misery in this case.

not racist ... it is a risky habit like smoking and drinking .. i know people of colour that go to the beds and i laugh at them .. but i am sure more light coloured people go the the tanning beds ... but if it gets rid of this, everyone will be happy ...

I also didn't think of it this way either. Our taxes that we pay also go towards the N.A.A.C.P and the Black Caucus. I think that is wrong. I personally do not support any group who does not support ALL people. To me that is racist organizations. Call it however you may but if it's in the name then it's racist. I do not think that this tax is right. I have spent all of about no days in a tanning bed. To me I would rather been in the sun. The point of it is this. It is targeting one certain color of people. Unlike the cigarette tax it is not targeting everyone.

I agree to a certain extent but it is Racist. it targets one certain Color of people.
Please explain how it's not only racist but sexist? More women go to tanning beds than men. I know people of color go as well but I can bet that no more than 5% are of color. Which means 95% are of lighter color. Paint the picture what ever you want. It's racist. How come is it whenever the democrats do something racist no one has the guts to admit it. Or whenever the Al Sharpton does something Racist people can't admit it.

People have no problem calling the Tea Party Movers Racist though.

its not racist because it isn't targeting certain groups .... all races have light skinned people, black, asian, hispanic ... if you engage in high risk activity than it may be in the tax ..

It is targeting one certain group. Light skinned People. Out of the 5% you can include the Asians, Black and Hispanic people who use tanning beds. It is wrong and it goes along with the government taking our rights as individuals away. They figure they can't just strip us of our rights so they go and sign a bill that makes it almost unfordable for us to do. I don't smoke but it is a right we have as Americans to do. This is our Body. If we want to harm it than we should be able to do so. I don't drink but I think we should be allowed to do it and not be charged so much that we can't afford it. The drinking and the cigarette tax is different though. This is un american politics and he is a socialist president.

I have a serious question. Can a mixed man be a racist then? From what you're saying, since a mixed man is mixed then he can say what he wants to towards blacks and whites.

I know this is different but it hurts 95% whites which is RACIST. It's not just a dumb law. It's racist.

My problem is this. Whenever a white man beats a black man or kills a black man we hear the hollers of racism, but when a gang of black boys beat a white man with a brick then its not racist. It must be gang related.

This tax is most certainly going to affect whitey more than anyone else. To try to argue that is ridiculous. However, I would much rather the govt add taxes like this, luxury taxes, than to require me to buy/pay for something that I don't want or need. I can easily decide not to tan so I don't have to pay those extra taxes. Just like cigs and alcohol, that is a choice and I can easily avoid it without being fined. I like having a choice.

The poster is a bit racist if you ask me. Anyways, at the gym we have tanning beds, and I put some very dark Latino woman in their as well as some really dark skinned people as well. So I agree with Choke in that its not racist since everyone uses it no matter their skin color, or how easily there skin tans.

well that is a given because with almost anything because light colored people make up the majority of the population...You'd be surprised how many darker skinned people tan as well...there are luxury taxes on several things, I don't see this as any different

You argue that its targeting certain groups of people...Do you also disagree with taxing cigarettes?

donaldbreland

I think that taxing things upon what people like to do is wrong. It's just a form of the government owning us as individuals.

To logrus. Why am I racist. Please explain. Is it because I see past color and I am sick and tired of being called a racist because I stand up for what I believe is right. I think this is a crazy law targeting more whites than blacks. Does that last statement make me racist.

Miss Foxy

We will be losing more jobs than ever because of this bill.

Really what rock have you crawled out from under.
We been getting hit by luxury taxes for decades now. Look at the past few years how many times smokers are hit by a tax, the smoking ban is another example. I know in IL every time a politician wants to tax something he goes after smokers and drinkers. There are tons of examples similar to this as well.

As for tanning, dude every race tans,

Reason it seems like were targeted is because 80% of Americans are white, 13% are black. 15% are Hispanic, and 5% are Asian. All numbers rounded.

I would put tanning beds in the same category as cigarettes and alcohol as something that people do that is actually more destructive to their body than beneficial. According to the American Cancer Society, those who use tanning beds, before the age of 35, are 8 times more likely to develop skin cancer.

taxing people for something they enjoy may be wrong, but when that something is bad for you, i don't see it that way ... tanning, smoking, drinking, gambling .. these things can be addictive and lead to being out of control ... i don't think the intent of the luxury taxes are meant to be racist or impact one race more than another ... so unless they get new proof that toilet paper is bad for you, i don't think you have to worry about them adding a luxury tax on top of it

That is ridiculous when you think about it. How is it justifiable to tax an activity solely based on it being "bad for you"?

Where does it stop? A fast food tax? A candy tax? How about a tax on computers, movies, and video games because they cause people to live sedentary lifestyles?

Just because some people take things to the extreme doesn't justify everyone having to pay an extra tax on those things.

well, it's the cash grab that is gov't ... there was a story last year about an american that came to canada and bought a lottery ticket ... he won something like 7 mill ... half of it went to the US gov't ... i mean, crazy considering we don't get taxed on lottery winnings up here, but the US gov't took 3 mill something of winnings they had zero dealings in .. just ridiculous ... i hear ya though, somethings are just crazy

this was branded the "cracker tax" on the rick & bubba show (not sure who has that in their areas but you can listen online and they are awesome). and yes it is racist because in general only whites tan. also tanning beds are used to treat some medical conditions but there is not provision to keep it from being tax for medical purposes. i used to tan frequently but stopped because it caused moles and i had to have a plastic surgeon take them off - not cheap. it doesn't do that to everyone but it's really not worth the risk of having leather skin, cancer, or moles. hell if you get one of these and have government insurance you're probably going to die anyways under the rationing of services. cancer treatments are so expensive the govenment isn't going to pay for them. so basically they are going to take your money to discourage you from tanning, then when you need them to use those tax dollars you paid in to treat your skin cancer they aren't going to. baiscally they just want our money and don't really give a crap about any of us unless we have a sob story that they can use to get pitty support for their uncontitutional assertion into our freedoms. i don't find it ok for the government to tax something to try to discourage use - there is no freedom in that. that tax is just bs. the government doesn't care if you get skin cancer unless they are to pay for it which is a situation they are putting themselves in! they just want to profit off of people who don't reform to their way of thinking. the bottom line is our government is out of control and uses bs reasons to tax us, take away freedoms when they think they can decide better for us, and force their socialist views on us. yes i do think this tax seems racist, but "rich" are also taxed unfairly. why is 10% good enough for God but not the government? our tax system as a whole is screwed up.
