View Full Version : Think America Is The Greatest Country In The World?

I feel that many people here think that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world.

I for one consider myself a patriot and I love this country and know that it is the greatest nation in the world.

I have been to the Middle East, Asia, all over Europe and across North and South America, in total I've visited, worked and lived in over a dozen countries. I have experienced several types of culture, people, religions, music, entertainment, societies, food, languages and governments and have concluded that America has the best system in the world.

My question to everyone on this board: Do you think America is the greatest country in the world and what other countries have you lived in?

I think this could bring a unique discussion about all topics that are represented in these forums.

Follow up question:

What other countries did you like or not like, or what aspects did you like or not like from those countries?

For example, a big buzz word right now is "Socialism" and it seems some people don't have a full grasp of what that word means and some think it's synonymous with Fascism, Nazism, Communism, etc. but having lived in Bolivia and Denmark, both countries with socialist aspects (and on either end of the socialist spectrum), you realize what a general term that word is, and you see how that system of government can fail and how it can be extremely successful.

I was born in Spain and I've been to Canada for a hockey tournament. Other than that, I really only know about USA.

As far as the "Greatest Country" I think that would depend on your context. Greatest in what aspect? I'm willing to believe that other countries may have us beat in some areas. For example, Japan might be technologically advanced. Australia might have better waves to surf. Mexico might have warmer beaches. Brazil might have better jiu jitsu teams.

Overall though, I think we're a great nation with a lot to be proud of. I also know there are a lot of ways we can improve.

America is great but England is the greatest.

I give you Shakespeare, I give you Kings, I give you history, I give you Castles and Palaces, I give tradition, I give you democracy, I give you beautiful churches, I give you Barcays and HSBC, Vodafone and Marks and Spencers, I give you Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I give you Football, Cricket and Rugby. I give you Chaucer, Brown, Trollope,Wordsworth, Keats, Wellington and Nelson. I give you Tea, manners, politeness, gentlemen, Stonehenge, I give you Michael Bisping, the Queen and Monty Python.

 Well anyway I am a sentimentalist and so everything in the past was better and modern society is going down the pan.

But I'll leave you with two quotes

Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."
— Samuel Johnson

To be born English is to win the lottery of life? Cecil Rhodes

Can't argue with that!

I've been to:
Germany (lived there for 2 years)
South Korea (1 year)
Bosnia (3.5 months)
Croatia (3.5 months)
Hungary (stayed for about 4 weeks total)
Mexico (a couple of weeks total)
England (a few days)
Austria (one weekend)
Ireland (a few hours)

Is the United States the greatest country in the world? YES!

The reason that Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism, etc. belong on the same end of the spectrum is that they are all forms of large, powerful governments. Monarchies would fall into that same category. The idea that the government is the "soul" of the nation and the center of power and the people are simply subjects of the government.

The extreme of this would be Totalitarianism, which is a government that not only seeks to control every action of its people, but it seeks to control their every thought as well. The frightening thing is that we are steadily moving in that direction with political correctness and the concepts of "hate speech" and "thought crimes."

What made America different, before the Progressive movement started to take over, was that the power rested in the hands of the people and the government was a servant of the people.

As Thomas Jefferson put it, "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."

Unfortunately, our balance of power is shifting in this country as people are handing over way too much power to the federal government.

Yes it is. By a mile. I live in a city full of people from everywhere else. that tells me America is the place to be:)

well i lived in Vancouver for a few years and that city is made up of people from all over the world so that must make Canada the best country in the world then as well.:unsure-1:

I have been all over the USA and last time i totaled it up it was something like 42 different states and almost every where i went i found the people to be very friendly and your country to be very beautiful and you guys should be very proud, but in my opinion Canada is better....not by a huge difference but by a little.

there are good things and bad things about the USA just like there is good things and bad things about Canada....i think Canada is better because i live here just the same as you think the USA is better because you live there.

why would anyone think any differently ?

Canada is beautiful in the forest areas but you can have the cities, as a matter of fact, yall can have Americas cities and we will take yalls woods.

As far as Canada being the best, Canada is like a loft over a really cool party, you hear and see the coolness but thats about it.

JK dont cry.

This thread has no chance of getting anywhere because everyone is gonna pull for there home. All countries have there opinions and Americans have the truth.

And England, ENGLAND??????!!!!!

lol. ok dude. Never been over seas but I have been to Canada and Mexico, but hey I live in the USA, I dont feel the need to go anywhere else. When you are eating good steaks and shrimp, why would you feel the need to chase after a soggy potted meat soup.

I love the fact that you know everything about everyone. lol
I have lived all over America and been throughout a lot of "betterthanyou-ville"(canada) and I will take America any day. Must be because I'm an uncultured redneck who hasn't been anywhere. WAIT!!! My step mother who was born in Africa, raised in England, spent most of her adult life in Canada, but now is an American citizen says that she would never go back. She does admit that all places have good parts and bad, but America is the best place she has lived. You guys can continue trying to convince yourselves whatever you want, but Why does America have so many people trying to get in, legally and otherwise? How many times have you heard about people dying trying to get into canada?

You can say what you want and try to sound however you want, but why is it that when our soldiers come back from everywhere, they have people telling them that they want to come to America.

From all our failings you guys made a stab at making the best country.

So you let us suckers do all the hard work and then steal the best ideas.

I love America, I love England, I love France, Italy, Israel, Spain, Germany, Egypt. I have seen beauty in all.

But to be honest patrotism for me has died down a bit because really it really doesn't matter because we have a greater kingdom.

And being American won't make you better than a Indian, a Ghanian or whatever.

This is like asking if Red is the best colour in the world ... it is so subjective and many people haven't lived in other countried for long enough to make a proper decision .. yes, you will have studies that take everything into account, and people still disagree with them .... i see it as this way ... if you are happy with where you live, then who cares ... i live in canada and love it .. i have been to many places, but never to live, so I wouldn't be able to say if Canada is the best ... but for me, it is the best

okay, so here is a list from the UN
Best Country to Live: List of Countries on 2009 UN HDI

The United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) released its 2009 Human Development Report, and ranked 182 countries in terms of the quality of life of their citizens, or the UN Human Development Index (HDI). The criteria included life expectancy, literacy rates, school enrollment, and the country's economy. Norway is ranked the first, followed by Australia and Iceland.

The data, however, were collected in 2007, before the global financial melt-down in 2008. Much has changed in countries such as Iceland, which experienced severe bank failure. However, Iceland's ranking is not expected to decline too much because of its high life expectancy and education standard.

Ranked the lowest were Niger, Afghanistan, and Sierra Leone.

Afghanistan was considered the second least desirable place to live in, with a life expectancy of 43.6 years, due to the war and civil unrest.

Here is the list of countries on the Human Development Report:

Top 30 on Human Development Index Ranking

Norway
Australia
Iceland
Canada
Ireland
Netherlands
Sweden
France
Switzerland
Japan
Luxembourg
Finland
United States
Austria
Spain
Denmark
Belgium
Italy
Liechtenstein
New Zealand
United Kingdom
Germany
Singapore
Hong Kong, China (SAR)
Greece
Korea (Republic of)
Israel
Andorra
Slovenia
Brunei Darussalam

Now I would never see myself living in Norway or Iceland, and I had many Canadian friends go to Australia to live and came back ... so again, such a subjective topic ....

Lived...or Visited??

I have only ever LIVED in England...but I have Visited Scotland, Wales, The Republic of Eire, the Channel Islands, The Islands of Mull and Iona, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, and Several from the United States of America, include Virginia, The District of Colombia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pensylviania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri

Greatest Country in the World needs to be defined.

In terms of Super-powers, currently it is the Greatest Country because it is the sole Super Power.

In Terms of Empire, its not very Great because its territories and realms are small, but then it didnt rise to power until after the age of empires really.

In Terms of Size, Its pretty Great because it occupies the vast majority of one of only a handful of continents on the planet, and its climate is vastly different at two different points in the same country

In terms of Age and Legacy, No, The United States is little more then a teenager, only New Zealand and Israel are younger then her, unless you want to count some of the countries that came into being after the collapse of the USSR I suppose

in terms of population No, infact she is quite Minor, she has lots of land and virutally no population

In terms of Military Strength, Yes she is Great

In terms of International Significance, well, she wobbled a bit recently, but she's still up there with the older boys

She is the last vestige of Christendom thats for sure.

so it depends on what you mean by Greatest. I certainly love Americans and America, she reminds me of what England used to be because in so many ways she takes after her Mother
