204 years ago today marks the begining of the End for the French, and Spanish as it happens.
Two Great Empires had emerged from Europe in the Middle Ages, The British, and The Spanish, and the two rarely got along. Two other Collonial Powers also tried their hand at Empire Building. The Dutch which were reasonably successful but very quiet and based on merchant trading more then anything else...and the French.
If there was one Country we could dislike more then Spain (who we beat when they tried to launch Several Amarda Attempts at invasion by sea) it was France. The hatred of the French grew as we tried to maintain our Empire, and they tried to Rob us of it (The loss of thirteen American Collonies for Example)
So imagine our disgust when Spain and France decided to become Allies, and attempt a joint sea venture with their two Navy-combo to try and invade England :angry: We were outnumbered Thirty Three to Twenty Seven, but Admiral Nelson, who was the commander of our Fleet (there were three commanders, the French, who we captured, and the Spanish who escaped but died as a result of the battle.) was a strategist, and he was clever with how he positioned the ships in the fleet in order to beat a larger adversary. Infact, although some British Ships were lost (well, one out of twenty seven), the first one didnt sink until after Twenty Two of the Spanish/French ships had been distroyed.
Sadly, Nelson died not long after the Victory, having been personally hurt during the conflict. He's burried in Saint Paul's Cathedral in the crypt....He's near Wellington...who I assume replaced him as Fleet Admiral, considering about ten years later when the buggers tried again, we had to squash them once again at the Battle of Waterloo.
You might like to know that to this day, if you come under the channel tunnel by Train, you dont stop at Dover, your first stop in England from France is in London....and the name of the Station...is a No Brainer...WATERLOO I Kid ye not!
