MILFORD, CT -- Twenty-three young people were arrested Wednesday afternoon after a backyard slugfest patterned after "Ultimate Fighting Championship" contests.

The brawl took place behind a home at 25 Breakneck Lane, off Meadowside Road and near Meadowside School, police said, and 14 of those arrested were minors.

After police learned of the planned fight, extra patrols were dispatched to schools on the west side to monitor activity at dismissal time, said Officer Vaughan Dumas, the police spokesman.

As officers arrived at the Breakneck Lane home, several youths knocked down fences in surrounding yards attempting to flee, Dumas said.

"This was the first time we've seen a planned fight like this, with scheduled bouts leading to a championship," Dumas said. "We want parents to know that this is happening and to be aware of it." The combatants were youthful offenders and cannot be named, he said.

All 23 arrested were charged with trespassing and creating a public disturbance.

The 14 juveniles received a summons to appear in juvenile court; the others received an infraction with an answer date of Oct. 16.

In addition, Byron Fernandez, 19, of Cooper Avenue, was charged with interfering with police. He was released on a promise to appear Oct. 13 in Milford Superior Court.

Others arrested were: Josh Kiernan, 21, of Seaside Avenue; Paul Roles, 18, of Wilson Street; Geoff Kochiss, 18, of Bridgeport Avenue; Daniel Wilhelm, 18, of Milford, Point Road; four others whose names were not released because they have youthful offender status, and the 14 juveniles.

According to the Web site www.ufc.com, the Ultimate Fighting Challenge combines martial arts moves with Olympic-style boxing.

The trademarked UFC organization was established in 1993, following an earlier Brazilian version.

It happened on Breakneck Lane. If you're going to name a street "Breakneck" you have to expect some shenanigans.

Party Poopers. Sounds like it would have been pretty exciting.

I say let um fight.

This country is too sissified for its own good.

If a kid gets hurt for doing dumb **** then he will learn his lesson.

to quote the outsiders "ain't no one ever got hurt in no skin fight".

Agreed.

At least this one was organized. "Back in the day" rumors would spread about two guys fighting at some site away from school. After school they duked it out and that was that.

We had things like this a lot when I was in school. Bunch of us would meet up and challenge each other.

At my school to reduce fights in the halls. Anyone could give any coach a letter calling out another student. It had to be hand written describing why you had a problem with the person. The coach would present the letter to the other student if they accepted then you meet with the coach before school in the field house or gym. Put on the gloves and go at it as long as you could stand it.

It settled a lot of problems before they got out of hand. When I was in school kids carried deer rifles to school to. What happen to the good old days.

yeah, I didn't do a lot of fighting in school, but was glad the option was there if I needed to. This story is just ridiculous. 10 bucks says one of the kids that got called out to fight tipped the police to get him out of a butt whoopin'.

The most shocking part is that people in Milford CT fight. What did they run out of nerdy stuff to do?

Why is it that whenever something happens and it has to do with MMA, all of the press who cover the story call it UFC? Do these people not know that it the sprot is Mixed Martial Arts? UFC is an organization. They should do better research before publishing a story involving the largest organization in MMA.

Or you should face reality and see that MMA = UFC.

It's sad but true.

No one knows wtf MMA is. You say UFC and they catch on real quick.

So every time something happens, it's ok to blame the UFC and give them a bad name?

They do it all the time.

Stuff like this doesnt drive away fans it attracts them.

Lets blame boxing for every street fight in the world while we are at it.
